These things only happen with small items. If i need a gem or something i usually whisper 3-4 people at the same time aswell. First one to respond to me and ready to trade gets it. I can't be bothered to wait 10min on a gem as a buyer neither.

I disable my standard shop thread when playing in a league. I think it's a waste of time to log into another league just to make a minor trade.

yes, but suppose you already got the gem from one of them - and the other seller sends you a PM.
would you answer something like "I already got the gem" or "no thanks", or would you just not answer and leave him guessing?
would you keep not answering, if he asks you again after a few minutes? and again?
and all that, is assuming you only got his attention while playing in the same league.
if he told you he'll need to switch leagues/characters to deliver you the requested gem/item, and you said ok, and he did, and he's sending you PMs... well why not have the minimum decency to. fucking. answer???

Ofcourse i would answer. Like i said it was certainly not nice what he did. Not a doubt about that. But is it trade related or are you just dealing with a bad person?
