The baseline is the unided chaos recipe. If you're not already including that with however you play maps, then go do that.

Lots of ways to accumulate currency/gear. But as others said it takes time and a little experience to know what you NEED vs what you can get away with.

1) Always use the chaos recipe early in a league. It's the only free money that is guaranteed in this game.
2) Pending on your build, consider getting a few pieces of MF gear as alternative pieces for when you are not pushing higher content. A little MF goes a long way.
3) Trading/flipping. Sadly this is the most profitable way to spend your time in this game. I have never played the currency flipping game, but there are almost always gear trends that you can exploit. Easier to identify these with experience.
4) Selling maps. This can have a pretty big dropoff after the 1st week, though.

Some combination of these things will allow you to invest in your maps through a good supply of alch, vaal, chisel, and sextants. Pile all those on maps with max MF gear and you can start to get serious returns. But you need a bit of a bankroll to get this going.

The main problem in acquiring the currency needed to acquire the gear necessary to advance in the endgame all revolve around doing the most boring parts of PoE and GGG seems hell bent on making this as difficult as possible. The classic double take in PoE is trading. GGG openly states "we want players to engage in trading for better gear" and attempt to push us in that direction by making 99.999% of drops be garbage to the current build. Then as if that isn't bad enough GGG does an about face by saying "we don't want trading to be too easy". I'm sorry GGG but you can't have your cake and eat it too. Most players are loath to want to trade because of your draconian trade chat and required use of out of game item searches. I can see new players saying "WTF! I have to keep my browser running and {Alt}Tab out of PoE to look for an item I want to buy. What kind of crap is this for a 2018 game?" Also another "WTF! I have to be in the game (be chained to PoE 24/7) to not miss a WTB. Where the fuck is the auto buy for selling my gear?". My suggestion was for a separate app for Windows and smart phone that would be like an instant messenger for sellers to be notified that a WTB was made on an item and be able to sell it from the app to eliminate the "sellers are required to be in-game to sell their items." The smart phone instant messenger app would untether sellers form their computers and would drastically reduce the no response for the WTB whispers.

Then there are the posts stating "just run a specific map with high mf gear to farm a specific divi-card". What kind of "repetitive as fuck" crap is this? all of this just serves to drive out many from playing at all.

So I can empathize with the OP on tired of being broke. The Chaos and Regal recipes are good for higher builds and takes little effort to do which is good. Right now I have 3 Exalts and 114 Chaos in Incursion with 2 builds (level 87 and level 76) so I'm not totally broke but any gear that is more than a couple of exalts is un-attainable in any 3 month league. PoE definitely has a screwed up economy and a shit crap way to trade. The full auction house route isn't good either (look how it nearly killed D3). A much better "easier to use" instant messenger trade chat is what GGG needs to offer as a starting point.

depends on your definition of rich to be honest. Every league I can get at least 30-40 ex to fund the builds I want to play. And that's by just playing the game,with little bit of everything inbetween (flipping,trading,investing early into the league)

Sell your currency; Silver Coins, Jewellers Orbs and Chisels. You can make fair amount just selling these.

It will keep it's SSF tag... that's enough.

Two things:

First, I'm in a similar boat to you and I'm still alive. I have I think 23 chaos to my name, I think maybe 40 chaos invested in my current gear, and no exalts to speak of. However, I've learned to get what I can afford and work around that. If the Gods smile on me and something good (ever) drops, I simply take what I'm doing currently and bump it up a notch. I can't match the 100 million DPS vs. Shaper claims of others, but I clear low tier maps and I'm trying to work my way up.

Second, this is getting into economics, but the highest end stuff is disproportionately priced. It's why you see a Ferrari (low end, not La Ferrari) costing $500k when you can get an almost as good Porsche (high end 911) for $200k or a notch lower down BMW/Mercedes (M5/AMG) for $100k.
