I honestly like the bots, they make trading currency quick and easy.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Thats gets old. I like playing with whatever I find now. Feel more like an adventure. Like Robinson Crusoe or some shit not all commodified and busy like RL. When I came here I trade/flipped etc.

I think its very saddening to read all the posts in this thread.
I think its time that GGG starts to form a Board Of Inquiry Committee to look into the situation urgently and put up a permanent solution to solve this problem.
I also think that perhaps the best way to permanently destroy all the botters and gold farmers is that GGG put all the exalt orbs, chaos orbs, GCP, and everything in the cash shop.
And whatever the price the gold farmers sell, GGG will sell them for TENCENT less than what the gold farmers sell.
This will solve the problem immediately and permanently. Believe me..... Its true....

PoE has *always* operated under an implicit honour system on a number of levels, simply because as others have pointed out, it's unfeasible for GGG to police this stuff effectively. This is the collateral damage they accepted when they decided to put a trade system into the game that has pretty much zero regulation and is incredibly vulnerable to all sorts of scams and exploits.
Maybe do it on a different account though. We sort of know this one now. ;)
Oh come on, what is this lunacy? “Honor system hard to control”? Give me a break. I added some trade bots to “friends” back in Abyss league and they are life and kicking till now, operating every day, with thousands of all types of currency. I’m convinced they were reported hundreds times, but developers will not ban them, as they are… auction house in fact. GGG can’t apply it directly, because two years ago they published “trade shittyfesto”, long outdated today, but treated as dogma, or, more precisely, they pretend it is dogma, as with trade bots they can pretend, there in not any AH in game and it is unnecessary too. That all about “control and honor”. Oh, and when it comes to RMT shops… I really wonder who owns them :P

I don’t like bots, but I like anything what make trade easier.... Until GGG comes up with some better trade system I’ll buy from them if needed.. Better than waiting for ages for reply than play t game.. it’s sad but true:(

Wow I don't even know there is trade bot. I was thinking all the trade I made is with a real user.
Aside trading bot which not really broke the game, bot for farming is a malice and bad for economy in online games, especially if one use multiple bots. Hope this can be prevented if they exist.

Trade bots make my life easier. If the owners make some profit it's fine by me.
Also trading with a bot then reporting it strikes me as the height of hypocrisy.

GGG owns the bots. Bot costs around $15 /month right? GGG must be making money out of them. Why else they don't get banned? Has been like this for years now. Sad.

Don't give me nonsense about a lack of resources. Go spout some forbidden words in chat, within 5 minutes a GM will mute you because someone reported you. They have plenty of time and the bots are easy to spot, moreso after a report.
Trade bots are far worse than farming bots. Trade bots print money at an alarming rate, if you wait in a bot's hideout for 5 minutes you'll see tens of players come and go. Their earnings increase exponentially the bigger their currency stockpile grows. Hell, they can probably buy multiple headhunters per day. The bot I saw with 1500 harbinger orbs.. that's 100 exalts worth of just a single rare currency. He has over 12000 chaos! 1 month into the league!
If GGG doesn't take action then I might as well run one myself. As a casual player it would be fun to finally have all the currency I need to max out all my builds and actually play the game without hundreds of hours of braindead farming!
Investigating a bot is way more hard than looking at a chat log and seeing someone used inappropriate slurs or whatever. Mainly because they mimick legit trading behavior. Many players flip tones of currency and items.
They absolutely do not mimick legit trading behavior. Have you ever spoken to a customer service chatbot? It's like that, but worse. A short interaction will reveal the fact that they are bots. A GM can interact with a bot after a report. Freeze the account and all currency is lost. Ban the IP and other ways of identifying a player/machine. Zero tolerance. Anything to at least make it harder.

The game is full of trade bots, especially on the currency market. People get extremely rich this way without even being near their computer. These are most likely AutoHotkey scripts set up to buy low, sell high. They run 24/7. They're the players you see in leagues with 25000 glass baubles, 1500 Harbinger Orbs etc. They are easily recognized when you interact with them, it's very clear there is not a player running the character as they can only process specific input and always provide the same output.
You are allowed to use a macro that spits out a text message reply.
Getting a, "Your item is ready to pickup..." reply from some of the currency flippers is not evidence of a bot.
They have it setup on a single keystroke so they don't have to type it out all day.
And that kind of message macro is allowed since the message is a single server action. It cuts the details out of your message to them to build the reply.
I can tell the difference, thank you. As I said: they are only capable of processing very precise input and always provide the exact same output. If you change the stash position coordinates of an item but keep the name and price the same, the bot does not respond. Want to buy 2 maps? You have to copy/paste your trade message twice and go through the process of joining the party, trading and leaving twice. Just some of many examples. There is no human involved on the other side.

I'm genuinely curious here: do you want to run a bot and the only thing holding you back is the chance of being caught? That means you're inherently immoral and happy to cheat, right? Well, good news for you. The chances of being caught are indeed quite low.
But if you're trying to make some other point regarding bots and trade, you're not going about it very well.
Please don't delude yourself: we've seen this sort of post many, many times before. They never end well. The argument of 'well others do the wrong thing and don't get caught, so why shouldn't I?' isn't an argument at all. It's asking for an excuse to indulge. What, did you expect people to somehow confirm your illicit desire as A-Okay?
If you're playing an ARPG like this purely for the pretend money in it and care little to nothing about the gameplay experience itself, well I'd probably suggest more lucrative, rewarding trade-based games for a start, but I'm willing to bet even if you do break the rules in the most obvious way, you'll still be far, far behind the real 1% of this game wealth-wise. 'All the gear, no idea' applies here. There's a lot more to profiting from the economy than running a script. I do know some seriously wealthy players and most of them just play the meta and trade smart. They also form groups and delegate duties. But eh, like I said, no one's stopping you from trying, just to see and to know.
Maybe do it on a different account though. We sort of know this one now. ;)
I don't play Standard, I only play leagues because standard economy is even more screwed. My time is limited. For example, I physically cannot farm a Headhunter in 4 months. I can play 1 or 2 builds per league.
Can you give me one downside to running a bot? It doesn't appear that there is one. And I wouldn't mind having the currency to max out my characters. Don't give me any of that morality crap. If GGG does not take action against bots they are sending a message that there's nothing wrong with running one.
How many of those "seriously wealthy players" you know can earn 1000 exalts within the first month of a new league with a fresh economy?

To the people saying they like bots due to easy trading.. try considering that those same bots heavily out-compete real players and have driven many of them away from active currency trading. I must trade with bots because there are almost no real players selling bulk currency (or currency at all for that matter). The lack of responses you get from whispering real players is a symptom of botting. Get rid of the bots and there will be a massive vacuum that can be filled by real traders. People need different types of currency, after all. It's not like they're suddenly going to stop crafting and playing.
You can kill them all in one fell swoop with a proper captcha check during suspicious activity (either triggered automatically or by a GM). If there is a player at the keyboard, which there should be according to the ToS, he will solve the captcha. Fail several captchas in a row? Temp ban. Several temp bans? Perma ban. These scripts are not sophisticated at all, this would crush them while real players likely would never see them.

I can only agree with this. at some earlier seasons I earned alot more currency by exchanging than I could farm in the same time with my build. but now? take a look on the buy and sell rates, there is only a very little spead, what means you have to have to trade masses to earn something. The chaos/hour via currency exchange is, at least for me, not worth the time anymore.
I belive that this spread would open again with less bots on the market, which would make it more interesting for real traders like me.
You say Prison Cell, I hear 'Holiday'.
