The whole thing still sounds very, very strange to me.
Somehow something was apparently fixed, which apparently actually fixed the hard freeze problem for some people. Other people are still having problems - and there are still recent reports of hardware damage after such a freeze.
For me, as a non-PC expert, this is all completely incomprehensible and I would really appreciate it if GGG would address a few understandable words to the average consumer. To be honest, I stopped playing PoE 2 just before Christmas because I'm actually a bit scared that my PC, which is only 6 months old, will be damaged by such a hard freeze.
I honestly don't dare start the game again at the moment.

They have already addressed it, and have deployed a fix which fixed the issue for a significant chunk of players, now it's up to you on what you want to believe.

The worst of these is a full system freeze that has occurred since Windows 11’s 24H2 update. We still don’t know exactly what caused this problem, but we have deployed a workaround that seems to be preventing the freeze. We are working with Microsoft to find a better long term solution.

Okay, thanks! I noticed the text, but I probably didn't read it carefully enough.
All in all, it's a step in the right direction. But I'll wait before I log back into the game. Unfortunately, the risk of a hard freeze breaking my hardware is still there. There will probably be a 100% fix at some point.
Do your best, GGG!

GGG does not want to accept that it is their own engine that is causing the problem. The PoE2's code is triggering something on ALL operating systems. Their supposed fix is most probably an internal workaround that dodges the issue and only works for Windows 11 24H2, which is why GGG is so adamant this is a Windows 11 24H2 issue, because they cannot fix it for other operating systems with that method. The other alternative is debugging their code from the start which they for some reason do not want to do. I even wonder if they cannot because the one who actually wrote the code is no longer working with GGG... So their plan is to claim this is a Windows 11 24H2 issue and ignore the rest of the OSs.
They claim that the issue is potentially fixed for Windows 11 24H2, but we'll never know since there is not that many players left playing the game among those who are experienced the issue.
There is also the fact that Microsoft have not backed GGG's claim of working with Microsoft to find a better long term solution. They had made an announcement for the case with the Ubisoft, but not with the GGG... So GGG's claim is suspicious.
What we know is that issue continues for many others.
So once again I'm bumping with these questions, in hopes that maybe they will get answered by GGG's official staff:
1) What went wrong?
2) What you are doing to fix it?
3) What possible causes have you eliminated as the source of the problem?
4) What triggers have you discovered that starts the resource hog loop other than "zone change"? (This one is really important because it allows players to create workarounds)
5) What is your estimated time of fix?
6) How did this sort of bug managed to avoid detection in your testing period?
7) What you will be doing to compensate players that have been affected by this issue?
8) Whether refunds would be made available for those that are no longer interested in playing the game?
To other paying customers like me who have spent their money on this faulty product:
As long as GGG is not interested in open communication our only other option is to increase the pressure and warn others by giving a negative review for Path of Exile 2 on Steam in a detailed and informative manner.
According to a GGG community manager. The fix that they deployed is to disable multi-threading on load if the game detects that the OS version is the 24h2 update.
I don't think that this workaround fix will do anything if you are not actually running 24h2.
Might actually be worth updating to 24h2 for this reason. However, since they have not openly communicated what the fix actually accomplishes, nobody will know for sure.
On top of that. Im on 24h2 and is still experiencing freezes, so it is not a fully functional workaround to begin with, even for the target OS version, and whatever causes the freezes is still present in the code.

This is very unfortunate if true, although not surprising since they have been apt to attribute this to 24H2 and not entertain that it is a systemic problem. E.g. if you run the client on a recent Linux kernel like 6.12 or 6.13 (try a rolling distro like something based on Arch) you will absolutely experience the crash. A workaround mitigation that is conditional for a specific build of Windows will do nothing to help those customers.
They even removed this issue from the known issues / high priority issues thread. That is totally unacceptable.

What do you want them to do? They have a race condition somewhere deep in the bowels of their asset loader. This code was probably inherited from PoE1 and has been subjected to decades of performance/security hacks (probably by employees that no longer even work at GGG) until it has become an inscrutable mess. That the current dev team doesn't have the technical knowledge to diagnose and fix the problem properly is obvious from the fact that this thread has had hundreds of replies in it for months now. They've found a workaround that works for most players on the most popular OS's most recent patch version, and have moved on to fixing more visible and easier bugs.

Not a single crash after the fix. Before would take 4-5 crashes to enter a map.

The patch fixed so far the crashes/hard locks while loading but yesterday i had the first hard lock while playing. It was the same behavior compared to the loading issues before the patch and i had to reset the PC.
So there seems to be another issue but it´s very rare because it happend after some hours of playing the game.

Update from me:
The game is still running great. The only concern is that POE Uncrasher (which I still keep running in the 2nd monitor) almost always reports a "not responding" on the first zone I enter after logging in a character. After that, it zones just fine.
Odd, but I'll still keep POE Uncrasher running for now.
