What are your thoughts on the current amount of death penalties in game

If i recall correctly, the death penalties in POE 1 were as follows:
10% Exp loss
loss of map after 6 DEATHS used
loss of fragments after 6 portals

The current death penalties in POE 2 are as follows:
10% EXP Loss
Loss of map after 1 death
Loss of mechanic (ritual, expedition) after 1 death
Loss of basic map boss
loss of fragments
loss of loot

Am i missing anything? The death penalties have increased, and what was given in exchange? Im not understanding why death needs to be so exponentially punishing in POE 2. The only thing this much punishment could possibly encourage is static playstyles. Its why hardcore has log out macros and a lack of build diversity. IN what way has adding all of these punishments for death improved the end game?
In POE 1, if you over juiced a map, you could go in there and nip at it and at least leave with some loot to recoup your losses, here, you look away from your screen for a second a die and poof thats it. Cat jumped on your keyboard? Whelp there goes all your investment. Why must the end game mapping process be so sweaty?

It's absolutely disgusting.
/played 12 days, and yesterday & today I just didn't even WANT to play.

My addiction has been culled by the disgusting death penalties and all the bullshit on death effects, burning ground, and ground aoe bullshit that's just instawiping my 5k+ health pool (Life + ES + Mana)
It's not enough!

As soon as you portal into a map, there should be AT LEAST a 30% chance for a Volatile immediately exploding for 100k damage into your face and killing you and randomly up to 5 of your other characters!
You should also lose some gold when you die. The monsters that kill you loot your corpse. Can also add that they also have a chance to loot one of your equipped items, resulting in you losing it forever.

XP loss should bleed into the next level, meaning you can lose a level if you're not 10% over.

Also when you die, the current map turns into Augury or Vaal Factory (or some other cancerous layout), if you decide you should or need to run it again.
Not supposed to be POE1 so not sure why you are comparing it to that game.


You lose mechanics and loot in poe1 by the way from even one death.

This is the crying wails of a soft newborn baby who crys at every thing for no reason. Come HC all the problems 100% exp loss as you mention above will become inconsequential.

its a lot. its not at a point i would quit playing but i think in the bigger picture its maybe a bit much?

i get why he wants the xp penalty for the lvl100 race, hes probably right.



but i do genuinely think having the penalty start at lvl90 the way jonathan suggests they could do is a better system. we have to lose stuff we care about on death, it has to feel bad, i think we lose enough stuff that up to lvl90 that is enough and actually its better to let people feel like they can learn their build, try hard bosses and lose, learn mechanics etc without losing an hour+ of xp. you just lose the content and the loot.

i defended the xp penalty with a passion in poe1 for 12 years and i still think it is the only mechanic that works in that game for making death meaningful.

i think poe2 has systems that allow for a better way of punishing people with 1 portal content. but i accept what jonathan is saying about the 90-100 grind, i think he makes the point and its right.




so yeah, move the xp penalty to lvl90+ and that would make the system really good imo. keep everything else, balance some stuff around it tho like how often you get to attempt content.

I love death, I hope they put more explosions on enemies and also explosions on when you pick up a divine orb.
