[Suggestion] What If POE2 Had No Starting Classes?

I’ve been thinking about the class system in Path of Exile 2, and I feel like there’s a cool opportunity to make character building more flexible. Instead of picking a class during character creation and being stuck with it forever, what if players just started with a single base character with no class attached?
Then, once you’re actually in the game, you could find class altars, temples, or some kind of shrines that let you attune yourself to a specific class or ascendancy. These could be discovered naturally through exploration. It could even allow switching later on — maybe not for free, but through a special altar or a cost. This would let players experiment more without constantly remaking characters just to test a different class fantasy or mechanic. It also fits POE2’s more adventure-heavy direction. I just think it would feel awesome to discover a new class altar in the world and pivot your build in a meaningful way. Curious what other players think about this idea. Actually, you don't choose a Class, you select an avatar and really target an Ascendancy because in this game, every Class can use every Skill.
The only "limitation" is your starting point on the Passive Skill Tree (PST). For me : 1 - Classes are experts in some Domains (Fire, Ice, Curse, Poison, Trap, Melee, Range, Magic... etc) but can't use others. It's more easy to balance because you limit Skill/Item/Armor available for that class. Some associations are simply impossible. And so, you can purge the passive area of the useless nodes that are present only to try to balance some builds. Ex: - Sorceress are expert in Elemental Magic but are limited to Staves and Light armor. - Warrior are expert in Melee Weapons, Heavy Armor but can't use Magic. - Witch are expert on Curses and Summoning but are limited to Wands, Scepters, Focus & Light armor. 2 - No Class means you can do everything but with no bonus & no limitations. The problem is balancing that because only feedback can show the OP combos players will find. :p You have to go 2 ways on the PST if you want to build a Warrior/Mage and waste many points. mate you didnt understand my point, I meant instead of choosing class in the very beginning we can choose any class after we start the game, and there will be class change method later in the game, meaning we dont need to create 10000 characters to test the builds we want

Just to be sure we're align on the following informations:
Class = Avatar, PST starting point & 3 specific Ascendencies. Build = Path made with points on the PST. Skill = Obtained via Gems available to all Class/Ascendency but linked to a Weapon type. Weapon = Available to all Class/Ascendency. Ascendency = Linked to a Specific Class but not mandatory. Specific Skill = Linked to a Specific Ascendency. Are we okay with that ? more or less yes, main point is to be able to change base class ascendency

In this case, I agree with you if you want to be able to change Ascendency at anytime.

" I might be misunderstanding this but you can change ascendency now I thought.... Or do you mean like Gemling change to chalupa monk or something? If so, no I don't agree with that. There has to be some permanent decision made when you make a character. They just added ascendency swap in .3 if I am not mistaken and that was the perfect compromise IMO. You cant create a situation where you only need one character for anything. |
