According to SteamDB it's actually worse for player retention. 0.2 had a dropoff of 40k first week, this is looking to be a dropoff of at least 80k. The core base of people who keep coming back is getting notably smaller. 0.3 had incredible retention, only lost like 20k during its first TWO WEEKS.

And if you think GGG has always made good decisions you are so very wrong, PoE had more player retention 5 years ago than now. Sure it has more players now but less retention. You do are right that most people quit and leave a negative review. In fact more people quit and don't even leave a review to be honest. But there are less people who complain however this is why it is important to listen to those complaints because those people are giving you the feedback for you to stop bleeding out the silent majority who just quits. The hardcore players are liking the changes so long as it doesn't affects their build. Any who has a build affected doesn't likes and well, how long have melee players been complaining for too? Perhaps there are several problems in needing of address but melee is still playable and good past a certain point, it's just a horrible way to start. Totems are just awful all around with mortar being the sole exception and even that I'm sure will be made irrelevant because it's a totem and GGG hates the new cool things they invent. And since you asked. Spell totems are just bad in general. From when you pick them all the way down till the point you have ridiculous currency, they just don't do well. Again a self spell caster is doing so much better in terms of damage and clear speed when in reality they should only have better clear cause they don't have to wait for totems to pop out and start attacking, they should lose quite significantly in the DPS race but they don't. Maybe give Spelltotems a cooldown that can be skipped with 3 power charges. Then its possible to just play one totem for some helper skill
