Rares can have up to 6 augments - using an exalt is the only way to get all 6

Still no exalts for me. I've been playing since a bit before open beta too. I have leveled around 10 chars to lvl 80ish. I would guess my playtime to be around 1000 hours so far
I only play solo, that might be the reason.

Alch will make white item roll 4 to 6 mods (correcting Xoon77)

You can get 6 mods without needing an exalt. I don't know why you thought otherwise, I'm sure you've found tons of 6 mod rares. They vendor for augments.

I've only played a few hundred hours and have found 5, I guess I'm running above expectation.

I found 3 in various races, 2 in normal play.

Yeah, I've never found an Exalt, but I've found several Alchs and several 6 augment rares. So I guess I still don't know what makes Exalts so valuable, other than rarity. I mean GI stromal tumors are also rare, it doesn't mean I want one.

And you're about right. They're valuable mostly because they're rare. They're also a way to craft perfect end game gear, or make that high level rare map even better.

But that's something you will never do, you and 99.99% of the player base. The handful of no-lifers who play this all day long instead of working a day job can afford to buy everyone else's exalts, and enjoy using exalts for their intended function as written on the item.

edit: sorry for the rant, if there's something I hate even more than desync, it's the "crafting" system.

I actually thought that was a pretty good, informative response. If I ever find one, I guess I'll just try to sell it to a gamer.

Exalts are awesome because the odds of you finding a great 6 mod rare are low. You can find junk 6 mod rares easily enough.

However the odds of finding a great 4 or 5 mod rare are much higher.

Exalting an already great 5 mod rare in hopes it rolls a great 6th mod is very valuable.
