And 77 res is over capped, and I should not be getting 1 shot by it with the defensive stats I have regardless if I used a topaz flask or not.
Also I don't plan on testing it unless I'm freshly leveled, but if I get one shot like this then chances are I'd still get 1 shot from that attack even with a topaz flask, because I doubt it's all LIGHTNING damage..

I'm just saying that I think it's a bit much for an attack that melee characters don't have a strong chance at being able to dodge it. I consider myself pretty tanky and I'm viable in many end game maps including 77's and to have a 74 boss be able to 1 shot me is quite a bit.
Had the map had extra damage mods? I could see that. Please do me a favor andinuad, seeing how you are level 74, have you tried this map boss yet? When you do, bring a topaz flask and try fighting him on a melee character and tell me if you're able to dodge the attack easily/not get one shot with having at least 5k life and hell use a topaz flask if you want.

71 Temple Piety does a hell lot of elemental damage given that it is just a 71 map. Stand still for 3 seconds and count the total damage you take from map piety, dominus and Megaera. It is insane numbers. I couldn't care less about whether all that ele damage comes in form of a large hit or many smaller hits; it only matters for the status ailments.
All this leads towards the conclusion that GGG those bosses with elemental potions in mind. Since you aren't using one against Dominus, your right to complain is lackluster.
About that lightning attack: I did some testing before, and if I remember correctly changing lighting resistance heavily influeced the damage taken, but using granite did not seem to matter at all. Of course this can be tested against normal difficulty Dominus.

Yes, GGG loves gear checks and Dominus is one such. Welcome to Path of Exile? I certainly prefer bosses to be designed more like Vaal: where you can avoid all damage if you play like a god, but GGG loves those gear checks and I have accepted this.
Furthermore, bring 2-3 pots depending on your dps. Each pot gives you 2 times 4.2 seconds => 25.2 seconds in total if you bring 3. Of course if you are a crit build, you can recharge while you actually fight.

You clearly isnt up to GGG standard if you cant kill end game map bosses in 4.2 seconds. But dont worry, GGG loves you and is willing to help. Thats why you have multiple flasks and 6 portals.

First of all, "character" is not equivalent to account. My standard characters on this account are reeped characters. This account = "andinuad".
About vaal: all forms of vaal, including maze vaal are properly designed.
I am not stating that a topaz flask would have saved you, but is certainly a massive error to go against an elemental endgame boss without the proper elemental flasks.
Let's assume that the hit barely killed you: that means that the non-mitigated damage would be 5k/0.23 = 21739. With 87% resist through topaz flask, you would only have taken 2826 damage instead f the assumed 5000 dmg at 77% resist.
If you had prepared your character with the no-brain choice of Saffell's Frame in your second second weapon-set, then the damage given the assumptions would have been only 1739.
Hell let's for sake of the argument say that the attack that killed you actually did 10000 damage, then if you had prepared properly, you would have only take 3478 damage.
