Fixing Hailrake

This guy is going to kill 15,000+ noobs on launch day.

Not that there's particularly anything wrong with that, it's a good lesson to learn - that POE monsters can be deadly. But, I think it would take the "cheapness" out of a death like that, if the following mechanic were introduced, so people can finally excise the phrase "sniped me" from the POE lexicon.

When you aggro Hailrake, when he has targeted you and is running into range to ice spear you, have him shout a battlecry, or some kind of dialogue. Hearing him before he's able to fire his first spear will give you a second to react and it won't feel cheap when you die. This is also a good opportunity to give Hailrake some more personality. He could shout something about the sea, sea-fairing, whales, or just being a hobo on the beach. Or it can just be a mindless grwhrahwah.

It doesn't even have to be voiced right away, having a line of dialogue flash in the chat is all you need.

Prepare for a bunch of elitist morons saying how being killed by an off-screen adversary is fun and shows a lack of skill.

Ye, this guys range is a bit of a problem, coupled with his damage output being enough to instantly kill most characters of that level.

To be honest its a reoccurring problem throughout the normal difficulty level. I remember thinking that Diablo 3's first difficulty was mind numbingly boring, but at least it wasn't stomping me into the ground with little promise of a difficulty curve. The friend I play with and I quickly realised that the two most challenging difficulty levels are the first and fourth ones. There is basically no difficulty increase between the first 3 run throughs, as the mobs seem to scale directly with your characters increased level and gear. However, at least in the later stages of the game you have had a chance to take your character in a certain direction. At the start you don't really have many choices of how to approach a fight.
Not a bad suggestion, anubite. As long as the dialogue isn't cheesy or punny. I should think a cry or something would suffice. Maybe they can reverse the Necromancer's voice samples...oh, wait. Maybe not.
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
I got a frozen ground texture around Hailrake added to our testing realm the other day, with the idea that you would see that something special is about to happen. Hopefully that will make players pay a bit more attention. The special sound que is a good idea, and I'll look into getting that added as well. That will likely not make it into the first version of open beta though.
Omnitect of Wraeclast
(depending on the direction I'm approaching him) I mostly see his cold shade on the ground before he'll notice me (of course only if I'm careful and not dumb running straight forewards...) and of course I cant say how this comes up if you use a (much) lower resolution. (I'm on 1920). To be fair on the hardware fact, it should use an aggro range of the enemies dependent on the resolution/range of sight of the clients.

It is lack of skill. Suck it up.

Also, you have more than enough time to alt+f4 if you get hit by the spear.
hailrake should be renamed to hailrakeyo

which, if said quickly, could sound as "he'll rape you"

Ah damn, and I was going to suggest these.

Making the ground all frosty around where he spawns is a cool idea but I do like the idea of an offscreen battle cry & not only for Hailrake, Gneiss & other rares could do with the same treatment IMO.
