Fixing Hailrake
While i see both sides on this matter and both are logical to some degree, I have to agree with the OP.
I play a bit more careless than i should, Probably. But so do most new players that don't have a heavy HC record in other ARPGs (which is most players or most new players i assume) and i have to say even though i do consider myself somewhat good at ARPGS, Hailrake still tends to kill me on new chars. As an introduction to the game, It is a bit harsh with the mentioned quite likely possibility to kill you off screen, esp. if you have even a meager amount of lag (and i do). Playing a dual-wielding swordsman of some kind.
In game name is Kaosu and/or ChaosBlade. |

I hope many new players die or nearly die at Hailrake.
It would teach them the most important thing in this game - dont run recklessly around because you think you are invincible. Always look ahead what is coming at you (even if its just a icespear flying towards you). Otherwise they will most likely die fighting with Chatters or in the Shipyard Grave Cave thingy. And i thik the visual effect is better than just some scream - i play while hearing music or voicechatting with others. I wouldnt even hear it. Dear Math, please grow up and solve your own problems, I'm tired of solving them for you. Последняя редакция: Leivi#3333. Время: 25 дек. 2012 г., 00:28:10

"Telling newbies to pay attention, then saying you wouldn't hear a sound because you don't pay attention to it. I hope GGG adds more important audio cues if only for the irony here. :) |

I wouldnt mind - i know that playing without sound is a lil bit more risky but i just pay more attention to the other things so its balanced in the end :)
And all i wanted to say is that its better to teach them as early as possible that they always have to pay attention to their surroundings ;) Dear Math, please grow up and solve your own problems, I'm tired of solving them for you.

It's dialogue, but dialogue in POE has a visual component - green text flashes on your screen. On their first play through, I suspect a majority of players will have their sound active anyway though.
For me, even as an experienced player, Hailrake can snipe me even if I'm expecting him. If he has a shout, then I know when I've found him, and that's all I think is necessary. I don't think it makes the game significantly easier and would give some "fairness" to the challenge a long-ranged magic foe presents. Hailrake does spawn on blueish patchy ground, but I've had him WANDER from this location before and he can be on normal sandy colored sand, in place of giving Hailrake a fixed spawn location, having a shout is better. I think the easiest and least invasive solution would be to change his damage type to fire.
In my opinion, the freeze mechanic is pretty retarded as it is, but that's just what I think. Regardless, I don't think brand new players at level <5 should be having to deal with this mechanic that they have never encountered before. I think Chatters already serves as a lesson in cold damage, at a much more appropriate time in the game. |

Imo, an issue just as big as Hailrake, though there should probably a more forced/explicit mention of Hailrake being optional/particularly dangerous, is the upper submerged passages.
The cold damage there can easily be brutal if you happen to get unlucky. |

Hailrake should stay sharp like he is.
Give him some champion packs around even! |

Easy solution, just switch on Hillock's turbo mode for OB normal start. That way he can kill at least half the 15,000 noobs first.
