Browsed the 8 featured good games that IGN mentioned not a single penny needed to spend to play.

This is a direct quote from the remark of IGN on Path of Exile
The last couple of years have seen a renaissance of sorts in the action roleplaying game genre, but few have felt quite so inviting as this gloomy indie adventure. You could spend hours studying its skill tree alone, which allows you to mold one of the starting classes into almost any playstyle imaginable. Loot falls like rain, the grim settings contrast strongly with the bulk of its contemporary competitors, and you can play through the whole thing without ever once thinking of paying.

Though I'm not quite sure about the part without ever once thinking of paying, well the MTX items are awesome, everyday I would lay my eyes on them, hoping I can wear them one day lol

It is indeed a great news!
Long live POE.

Nothing tops POE in the arpg section of gaming.
I've given up on lending any credence to game reviews. For obvious and understandable reasons, the reviewers rarely put more than 5-10 hours into any game they critique. This significantly affects their ability to give meaningful insight on how most people will actually end up playing the game. Especially with games that have 'end game' content which is what most people will spend most time playing and the reviewer never actually sees.

This particular review remained vague enough that it's not possible to determine how much playtime the critic put into PoE, but there are many many reviews out there where it's clear that the person writing never made it into the second Act.

Nonsense. You are basing that perception on your own play style. I've probably got close to 1000 hours played and less than 10 in maps. I'm not typical either. The typical player probably plays through normal a couple times and gives cruel a try and then quits for another game.

Its good advertisement first and foremost. And how can the people writing about a game test it for a week or more? They got a job to do and they got a lot to write about and many games to test. Its like if i send you food to try and you write a review. Are you a food critic, no, youre not, you can however make a judgement on what it tastes like.

Thats what these people do, they test it and write their review. And i can tell you, i played for 5 minutes and knew POE is the best arpg in the world. No need to play for a week or a month or a year or trade all day or do maps forever and ever.
Well deserved. I don't really agree with Tera though.

Seriously, I was thinking about this while running errands the other day. You can do more to one skill in this game than you could with almost an entire skill tree in D2. Take Fireball, for example. You can add elements, you can split it, you can make it homing, you can alter its blast radius, you can affect its projectile speed, you can increase its chance to crit or inflicting burning damage...Sure, some of these might not lead to immediate power boosts but the point is, the options are there. In D2, you had...what? Firebolt. Fireball...uhm...and that's it, in terms of fiery projectiles. Meteor was something else, and I'd still argue Firestorm can be tweaked to completely outperform Meteor.

...But they're totally different games. Different eras. A better comparison would, of course, be TOG runes vs PoE support gems. One TOG rune can have a more dramatic effect on a base skill than five support gems, but then again we're losing the power of customisation beyond a single multiple choice.

This fact is part of why the quoted statement is true.

Just because I dont know: What is TOG?

Also: How do I make my fireballs homing? That sounds awesome!

So, what you're saying is, it's these people's jobs to play the first 10 hours of a game and then write a cursory "review" on their limited play experience. You've just proved his point. These reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt

Terrible, terrible analogy. A piece of food can be sampled in less than 5 minutes. You don't need to be a professional food critic, or spend 100 hours eating the same food to tell somebody that their food tastes like shit.

Also, we're not debating whether the reviewers are professional or not. We're debating the amount of time that it takes for a particular reviewer to experience the entirety of the game in order to write a fair assessment.

Funny, because a lot of people think the "first 5 minutes" of PoE is the worst part of this game, which turns many newbies away for the unexciting combat.
