Sure if you let an idiot design and program it. Let's see if I can solve this issue in 5 seconds of thought....
Yes!
Have EXACTLY the same loot drop as would have dropped in the current system anyway, but randomly divide it among the players as personal loot.
Seriously, where did anyone suggest that instanced loot should mean MORE loot. Stop twisting things.
Exactly.
And the idea that better loot allocation (whether actually assigned or simply a longer timer) makes the game "easier" to the point that it shouldn't be allowed as an option is laughable. Should GGG start banning premade groups who actually split the loot so that whoever benefits the most takes the items?
It is easier for YOU as YOU get that nice timer on the item instead of jimbo also have an equal chance at getting it. Instead, he currently gets to watch you waddle over and take the only unique that has dropped all day.
Face it, unless you get 100% you way with group loot, nothing else will be good enough. How is it fair to the rest of your group when the guy who was afk half the boss fight get the unique assigned to him and you all get some blues? You now lost your chance at that unique. Then you will complain that the system needs to be changed again.
Or, we could keep it as is, and you can choose some decent people to party with and let the rest of us enjoy the game the way we like.
How is AFKing during a boss related to a slightly longer loot timer? It's not like there's anything stopping anyone from standing around during the actual battle, then running around to grab the loot at the end today...
If someone gets the loot allocated to them for a second or two longer, it doesn't hurt anyone except the people that want to 'steal' it.
And like you mentioned, we already have the option to choose who we group with, so what is so bad about introducing an option for a slightly longer timer? Again, it doesn't hurt anyone except those who want to focus on clicking loot faster than someone else, often at the expense of actual group contribution.

We also need to change the game name to wowblow4 so everyone is happy thats what we all want right?
We need to add mounts and wings and butterflies! We also should take away all the scary monsters and replace them with flowers!
Will these be EVIL flowers?
NO! We can't have that. A kid in someone house might see the screen and be traumatized, have a seizure, knock over a pan, start a fire and cause the whole world to BURN!!!!

I've already posted in the other thread my full opinion on this, so I'll make this short.
So long as loot stays this way, I play alone. Not a big deal, but that will likely mean I'll get bored and move on.
People who move on don't buy micro-transactions.
Lots of people (over half, easily) feel the way I do.
These are facts. The devs are obviously aware of them, so the ball's in their court. Either way, this is a great game and I still love it.

I'll answer your question with another OP
Why do you believe the Casual players should be regarded in a higher favor than the more hardcore ones? Money? that seems to be the rallying cry of the casual when demanding such core changes to a game "Make it so my grandma can play it and you'll be rich!" Is that it? Well, I got news for you a game doesn't have to cater to the casual market to make a profit. so there goes that argument so again why should the devs cater to you and abandon their vision of the game? Obviously from the amount of supporters and players and the replies to this and many other topics like it, many people are just fine with the system. So what makes you so special? Why can you not allow us to keep this game the way we like it, and for many of us the BIGGEST reason we supported it. can you not see how even this so called "option" dilutes that?
The reason I ask this is the swarm of casual players demanding core mechanic changes that come around seems to just happen in every game these days. "I can only play in 30 second bursts this isn't fair!" "I dont like this game, make all these changes so i will!" Its tiring and annoying to see this group of people follow us to every game and ruin it. Yes we do get defensive and sometimes step out of line but with good reason. We have watched you so called casuals destroy just about everything we loved about the games of old and for once we thought we found our bastion of hardcore gaming but when we see this happening all over again your damn right we will defend ourselves and not give in as we know from experience once you give the casuals an inch they go a mile. It wont stop with FFA loot and by the end of it we'll all be left with a shell of a game that was once something to be treasured.
clap...clap...clap can i please copy this and put it in every thread i will ever visit.

It's less work for the group leader to kick someone's who's afk than to find out to which player an item "belongs".

Also: could you please stick to the topic in your own thread? Thanks.
@derbefrier (I'm not going to quote your wall of text):
How is FFA loot connected to a "hardcore" game? Just because the loot system sucks it's hardcore? GGG could also add random desyncs to make it more "hardcore"...

well there are some problems with both solutions.
let me try and describe SOME of these problems and then possibly solutions that don't create further problems.
1: there is a perceived unfairness (it may exist, i won't try to tackle that here) between a few groups of people. some of the groups experience some overlap. these seem to be the basic inequalities: melee's have greater chance at loot than ranged due to proximity, people with faster connections have a meta-advantage (external to game mechanics) and certain playstyles (those who focus on loot jumping instead of fighting) have an advantage. a lot of players would like a system that minimizes these advantages and "levels that playing field".
2: the economy in this game (right or wrong) was designed around people NOT being able to kit themselves out purely on incidental drops. adding a wow-style (forgive the reference) need/greed system or increasing the loot timer would have an adverse effect on this. resulting in characters kitting themselves out without having to take part in this barter economy. the option to opt-in or out of this system isn't as simple a solution as it would seem because the players do not have the ability to opt into trading with people who have opted out. every character that has everything they need from 1st party drops, simply doesn't participate in the economy and removes that possibility for trade from someone who HAS opted to trade. you cannot trade with people who wont trade.
Like the ski resort of girls looking for husbands, and husbands looking for girls, the problem is not as symmetrical as it may first seem.
so what is the solution? well there are many solutions, some more viable than others based on how you see the economy in video games. for the sake of this argument we will assume that the intention is for everyone to participate in the economy to get the gear they need.
one possible solution is to make vendor/cash/trash drops on a round robin with a long timer, but the gear people would actually want to wear on ffa. this ensures that everyone walks out with some accumulation of wealth, but not with a specificity that would allow them to avoid the player based barter system.
the problem with simply "setting an option" that allows loot to be distributed more advantageously, is that doesn't actually present a new option for players who want it without removing the old option for players who want that. once you open up a method for players to satisfy their gear goal without trading, they have no reason to participate in trade. This need to participate in trade is what makes the other option attractive to those players.
you need a solution that prevents the disparity of wealth, without allowing players to satisfy their gear requirements completely outside of the intended trade mechanics.
