Map drop rate Feedback (Updated!)
" I don't think its the random part that attracts you or the fact that its RNG locked impacts negatively... I think its the fact that in game that already heavily rely on RNG already you are locked out of choices. Sorry if it makes little sense, what I mean is: Instead of giving you choice to farm act 3 or maps (thats 2 choises) it gives you only one and the 2nd is luck depended which limits the amount of choice you have and since obviously the more choices a game gives you the more engaging it is. The people that say farming act 3 only is fine miss or don't mind the fact that they got limited choices. And for any who wish to bring up diablo 2 lack of choise - I got one thing to say: Diablo 2 didn't have the option for 2nd choise, POE has the option but it doesn't let you decide what to do in a more open way. In my perfect game (imagination of course) even in the most RNG depended style of game (ARPG) the more freedom (number of choices in this case) you give to the player the more welcome he will feel (the love people got towards the passive skill and active/support gems for example) Edit: Just wanted to add that ARPG style requires RNG to work as far as we know. Your gear drops, battle and in POE case most of orbs are working on it. It is not a bad thing but making game fully around RNG isn't the best idea (in my PERSONAL opinion). Therefore having SOME decisions of what to do lets us feel more in control and less praying to RNG gods (which hate me personally) For some gaming industry gaming information and to just learn more about games check out http://extra-credits.net/ - One of the most informative websites about the gaming industry. I don't think maps are scare at all. I have damn near half a page of em.
It is also not entirely luck based. At least in maps anyways. I'm selling maps if anyone needs any. |

I have done my fair share of maps as I am half way through level 83 now and just wanted to post a couple points that are pretty frustrating.
-Farming level 66 maps that serve no challenge repeatedly. -Getting lucky a couple of times in a row to get to a 69 or 70 map, chiseling it 4 times and rolling it rare with 100+ quantity only to get no maps inside and tank back to lvl 66 maps (I ran 5+ lvl 70 20% quality 89+ quantity maps and didn't get a single map in any of them) -I ran level 70 maps ~5 times, level 72 maps 2-3 times, level 73 once and that is as high as I've ever gotten. -I almost never do level 66 maps without 30+ quantity unless it's Monster Pack Size / Area is a Maze and I have gotten so unlucky as to completely run out of all maps...repeating again, always running 30+ and most times 42 quantity lvl 66s. While I agree that the low level maps are not as scare as some people seem to think, I do believe that the upper level maps are too far out of reach and should have a bit more chance to drop, especially if you are running over a certain quantity threshold, meaning that you chose the challenging route and should be rewarded. 100%+ quantity level 70 map yielding no maps is about as far from fun as I can think. I feel like I might as well be running the maps white as quantity on them is doing jack diddly. IGN: Aux Последняя редакция: Aux#2409. Время: 8 февр. 2013 г., 22:46:38

Well, a idear could be to have the Map boss drop a quest item (instanced) and the said item when traded to a NPC will give a map of your level range.
And also make it that you can only have 1 of that quest item at a time on your character. I would Keep certain map Drop only (best ones), to help keep market on maps sale. Could help with people not getting map, anyways just a idear. |

It doesn't matter if it would be implemented via quests, trading certain items to npc or just buying them from npc. The idea is to make the common ones more accessible to get the players hooked and keep the juicy ones locked under RNG (like dungeons in wow and raids locked behind RNG on the gear drops - not the best example but im half asleep)

If you need some maps to get started, I think it's easy enough to just buy some. check the forums for sellers.
But imo it wouldn't hurt too much to be able to vendor buy starting (absolutely limited to 66) maps from the vendor at a steep price, just as a way to force start with maps if you happen to get unlucky with drops. Imo the cost of the map should be high enough to make it unprofitable to run them. It is just a way to buy yourself into starting up a sustainable map pool. |
