At what level will my gems hit lvl 20?

lvl20 gem needs 332,069,613 exp
lvl 97 player needs 3,364,828,162 exp the 10:1 ratio is maintain

Thats too much. 97 is like hundreds of hours on one character. Nevermind Empower Gem which takes basically 4 characters making it to 90s to make a single lvl3.

A big part of it has to do with what content you're clearing and how fast you can do it.

We recently took a member of the guild I'm in to lvl100 in Ambush - his final play session to get to lvl100 was fairly long, and he did a set of new gems all the way to lvl20 in it.

In the grand scheme of us playing the game, that didn't take very long at all, and it was a full set from 1 right to 20. (when you're 99 and going to 100 your job isn't to do dps, it's to stay as safe as possible, so it didn't matter that he had crap gems in)

The difference is that we cleared exclusively lvl78 maps in that stretch, and we did them very, very fast. (6man party, and we had people running pub 77 fee groups to feed us lvl78 maps, and bought them outright when necessary)



The other end of the spectrum, is yeah - if you play like 3-4 hours a day, sure it's going to take a while for you to level up your gems. Isn't that how it should be? If you aren't aiming for a full set of 21/20 or 20/23 gems then you only have to do one set anyways! It's a goal to work towards! (and if you are aiming at the full 21/20 etc set... well you may need to reevaluate your goals based on your play time that you put in)



@above math - just to clarify - you will reach level 20 gems LONG before you reach level 97 because of your huge exp penalty from way before then at even the highest levels of content. Especially once you're starting gems clean from a high level, rather than the ones you started lvl1 with. Sure the first set seems to take forever, but after that they go by like lightning.



All that said, I do recommend buying lvl20 or 20q lvl1 gems to use - they are cheap enough and you need so many copies leveled that it's a lot quicker of a process if you start halfway done. (just because of the volume you need to do)

Well, you CAN always turn them lvl 1 with 20 quality, with GCP recipe, and there you go - another 20 lvls of gems to play. Amarite? Also, I'm not quite sure that PoE is about lvl all that much. :-p Because, you know, itamz. : D But I'll have to agree some people have some kind of obsession with hitting lvl 100, and saying really dumb stuff about exp and content being "gated" by RNG. :-V I believe there is A LOT to do in this game, but you really need to be into farming and grinding. Wonder why people want to change the game so bad, but won't just pick other game which fills their needs. :-V (Not saying PoE is perfect here!)

I got all my gems to 20 on my way from 84 to 85.
I was doing 66-69 maps all that time. Because (for me) its 20 times faster to clear them than a 74 map.
I ended up with a complete set of 20% gems for my next char and a very nice pool of 70-74 maps (even 74 thanks to +5chest level strongboxes).

I do it every new league since they introduced the 20level into 20% recipe - Using my first char just to level gems to 20 for my next build that I plan to enjoy.

Not so much Piety, but Midnights every day for sure. I've done Atziri so many times that I have an open offer of free flasks and boots to anybody who wants them. (seriously just pm me about it, I usually give away 1-2 per day)




On that note - Apex of Sacrifice is a very high mob density and a GREAT place to farm gem exp fast. (just sayin' ;) )


77/78 maps are for fee groups or running with guild, solo play time is farming Midnights, spamming Atziri runs, and building the mid part of the map pool up into the higher levels of maps. (ie running a 1chisel fee 75/76 group to find the maps for a 77/78 rotation or 1c fee group later on)

I like to level in bursts anyways - if you spend the whole day spamming Atziri at some point you're going to fk it up and take a death moving too quick - so I do it with 0% exp in bar. Then spam maps sometime to gain a level, then back to Atziri, etc.

Actually, level 20 gems are huge for spellcasters, summoners and such.

I'm 86 and the gems I've been carrying are all 19 2/3.

I figure one or two more levels and all should hit 20. Then I'll GCP them, make a new character that can carry 6 weapon switch gems, and level those to 20/20 for selling.

What else are off hand weapons for?


The gem exp scaling sucks from the perspective of leveling gems to 20 for actual use. For that, you are forced to buy them. Who the F wants to level their character past 87? From a playing perspective, it would make more sense to have gems hit lvl 20 in the mid 70's or so.
