Thread is simple, name a skill that never had its day in the sun. For example, there are some skills now that are not used often but at one point was the flavor of the month -- spark (spark totem) comes to mind. But what about those skills that never had their chance to shine, not even in a niche crowd?
Let me throw out my initial nominee:
I don't believe Cast on Melee Kill has ever had any real utility and the awkwardness of it is the cause. It has to be linked to the skill used to kill (one slot) and have something useful to cast also linked (one slot). And to top if off, it casts after you've killed something so it's only useful for killing the next thing. So at the cost of two slots and not being easily triggered, you get a skill that has never been part of any meta -- probably for good reason.
Anyone think this isn't the top choice? Why not? What else would dethrone it?
i think cast on melee kill biggest flaw is the poor interaction between attack and spells, add to that gem " when linked to a spell, modifiers to spells olso apply to linked attack gems" and the gem will become quite good specialy with items like Doryani's Fist.
single target melee skills have been in the trash list for quite some time or legendary elemental hit
special mention to vitality aura, people do use this aura but for the most part is a filler when there is nothing else to add, the bonus is way to low to be worth reserving mana/life.

I think vitality has made a huge comeback in large part because of this:
And most of them shone at one point even if you are to new to have been there for it, ALSO i get the feeling that meta sheep posting a skewed view because some stuff while excellent were just not meta enough for them.
Ancestral Bond. It's a thing that does stuff. -Vipermagi
He who controls the pants controls the galaxy. - Rick & Morty S3E1

That's fair. I'm not as much a semantic nazi as I should be with this game, since it's all semantics. I meant gems.
Vaal Lightning Warp. I don't think any gem can top it. I recall some extremely old niche builds for CoMK + DD, but I don't think I've ever seen a build that would in some way use Vaal LW.
Wasn't that the core of the Wormblaster? 5x Writhing jar + Pathfinder + Sweep + CoMK + Blade Vortex (the old one, that went up to 50 blades).
There was a time before trigger gems had cooldowns... the days of the old wormblaster. While I didn't play back then, I HAVE seen videos. You were able to pump out a ridiculous amount of spells.
As for gems that never shone? Storm barrier.
