The reason why XP penalty exists and why it's not for everyone

If I was the developer for a game, I'd be looking in the mirror and asking myself why I felt it necessary to force something like this on every player, for a once every few months event. Seems like it's just a weak argument to justify it.

Hasn't stopped people from coming back to PoE 1, or Diablo 2, or Elden Ring. Won't stop people from playing this game either.

The keyword you're missing in your post is SOME. Most, do leave.

And does elden ring have xp loss on death? I don't think it does.

Why are people so dishonest online? Is it like, an anonymity thing? Lie or exaggerate or cherrypick, or ignore the larger picture, just to make your statement feel better in an argument?

I'd rather have the XP penalty than losing the map mechanics.

When a character reaches 100, I have no desire at all to continue playing on that character. Without the XP bar moving up, it feels pointless.

So, what about you liking the build so much, you keep playing on it?

Because the character is finished?

When you finish Mario, do you keep playing the completed stages over and over again or do you start a new save file?

Racing to 100 in EA?! On top of the other problems that maps have?! On-death explosions you can't see, random one-shots from nowhere, getting one-shot from off-screen...

Okay, what about racing in leagues? Okay, cool! What about the players who DON'T want to race and simply just enjoy the game?

Jonathan REALLY didn't think this through...

This hasn't been my experience. All the on death mechanics are super forecast and there's only a few off screen mechanics I can think of. The meteor being one (albeit it is forecast but the cast animation might happen outside of view), even still as soon as you see that mob type you adapt accordingly, it doesn't track so its easy to not get hit if you aren't static.

Perhaps its more a character level/knowledge issue.

Experience penalty forces adaptation and adds consequence to the game. It's only severe at the highest levels when your build/power curve is basically done anyway.

+1
Simple rework the penalty to

1. Dead remove all the EXP you gained from "the failed area" instead of 10% of your bar

2. Only on Some map/area with sizable EXP boost have 10% penalty on dead
(provide some consistence way to craft EXP boost waystone)

So does dying lots, and having to fix your build so you stop wasting time.

I do it in every single game I play, even without XP loss. I died 3 times in a row? Okay lets look at some new gear and my skills. What do I get over the next few levels for skills or talents, should I go buy some potions to buff me or heal me? What about an escape spell if things get dicey.

Don't need to kick me in the nuts too with XP loss on death. I just lost 20 or 30 minutes from those deaths. That's good enough.
I don't care for the race to 100, meaningless to me, and yet I am forced to participate?
No defense to not make it opt in, the game has a chance to have more than a small niche playerbase so GGG has to respond now that Tencent owns them and majority of the old guard is gone profit has to rain in.

Also Jonathan really did not give any argument as to why it matters, only "build defensively", which you need anyway as to not die. The race isn't meaningful for at least 97% of the players and as was said many times, reward deathless runs with greater loot/xp and unique rewards you cannot get without dying and stop punishing a casual playerbase otherwise this will once more turn into bot of exile. This is an example of someone assuming that everyone cares for what he cares for but he has to consider other audiences.

Honestly regardless of changes, if you race to 100 in SC you didn't really achieve anything. Only HC 100 matters.

PoE 1 breaks player number records every new League, PoE 2 beta was their most successful launch ever. So I'm sorry but you're simply lying right now.

I don't get this argument that it forces you to stop and think about your build.

I literally do that in every single game where I die more than a few times in a short period of time. Like 30 minutes to an hour. Okay, 3 deaths. Shop for some potions, lets upgrade this piece of gear and that piece of gear. Okay, lets go get some herbs. Oh, I found a new weapon. Okay, what's my plan for the next few levels, where do I put my skill points, what do I need?

That is literally how games are meant to be played. Dying is the punishment. You just wasted 5-10 minutes. Die three times. Look at your character. That's what people do.

Why do they think it's different in PoE?

Reworking your build is fundamentally what the game is about imo, sounds more like playing for 30min than losing 30min. As a mechanism for encouraging adaptation I still think its invaluable also encourages people to understand the game mechanics rather then copying their favourite streamers zoomer build and never looking back.
