Character Names, Confusion and Aggravation

@Isbox1: Your suggestion is one of the things that annoys me about this system, though (the acronym and underscore technique). Not that I'm trying to insinuate that your suggestion was unwelcome, that's not at all what I mean. What I mean is that it's hard/impossible to find a realistic name that's not in use and a name like JD_RaiseZombie is not a name that a normal person would give their child.

Could I find a name that fit? Probably. Maybe Aasxxxggygy would work. Would I sigh inwardly every time I saw that because I failed to find any real name to fit? Definitely. Aside from that, nobody's really been able to explain why GGG does it this way. Some dude on the first page went on that it would make it easy for scammers and to that I'd say why isn't it easy for them to just sit down or set up a program and just enter in names until they snatched up one of the real names (or one of our compromise names) from real players?

As for Diablo 2, what are you talking about? I never had this issue in that game and I made a lot of characters, many with truly generic names, years after the game's release. This is never a problem that I encountered.

Youre simply wrong. In D2's BNet you didnt get to make any name that was already taken, just like here. And i dont want to read someones stupid account name but their char name. I actually even told people they have a cool name when i noticed them in town or even in chat.

If you pick a name that is popular by goodness, add something to it or combine it with something else to make it work. So many names are not taken yet, its hilarious people talk about how they cant find any.
I like the fact that every character name has to be unique you see some pretty funny names this way. If people were allowed to have the exact same name it would make it a lot easier for people to scam one another I bet you'd see a lot of people posing as Axn or Ventor.

Thanks for the suggestions Cryptic. I do have my own go-to name generators, but I'll give these a look over.

The issue I have is that I still don't know why this name exclusivity is necessary. I really would like to be able to put in a name that I thought of and not have that be a problem, but that's not the case here and I just don't understand why that is. I can be picky because video games are not a rare commodity. I am completely within my own power to just go to a different game I've played before, I just wanted to give this one a chance, see something new that isn't Diablo 3 and maybe put some money towards it (considering I sunk $60 into that disappointment).

Seriously, can anyone tell me why Path of Exile (and GGG) does this?

Try coming up with a unique name ? Obviously you arent inputting anything someone or someones havnt already thought of...
Dont name your kids john, robert, jenny, crystal, and shaniqua.

Not if our account names were displayed instead, just like in that other game. But that sucked the fun out of it because people didnt get creative with names at all. Nor could i compliment someone on an awesome name.

Yeah I guess - well - I am super old school, and even though I've been in graphical vid game RPGs since the dawn of man... I still don't see value in Role-playing. I guess perhaps if they designed a game that's sole purpose and function was STRICTLY ROLE-PLAYING - then ya, I get it... I might even buy that game... and in those very strict set of circumstances naming convention, I agree, is super important... but really? Being all concerned about "I wouldn't name my child that" vs naming your character in a hack and slash... those 2 items are synonymous to you?? Really??

I guess of all the things to complain about - and anyone who reads this forum know that I'm probably up there in the top 10 of people who bring things up - character naming is probably the last item on the long list to invest any man power towards. If you needed to pick between, say, new areas/maps/items/desync/crafting/trade system/drop ratios/character balance... etc etc etc - would you guys truly pick "I need to have Legolas" as the top of the list of priorities? Be honest.
I've got around the naming problem by putting two letters in front of the name. It has opened up pretty much every name I could want (SKThreat, SKTalon, SKTyrant etc).

Why do games like Path of Exile do this? Many different games have no problem with what you name your character provided they don't contain profanity of some sort.

WTF? You think you can't name your character because GGG doesn't like your name? It's because the name is already taken.

Some peoples' kids, man....
