Idea for the FFA loot system
Ok, so an extremely rare item drops with your name on it, and no doubt someone in your party is going to stop fighting so he can attempt to ninja loot it.
What can we do? Making the timers longer will give you more of a chance to get to it. I wouldn't mind a 30 second timer myself. Gives the person plenty of time even during combat to decide if he wants it. The second solution is... when an item drops with your name on it, and someone else attempts to pick it up, have it bring up a box asking you if you want the item or to decline it. If you click you want it, since it had your name, even if he picks it up, you'll get it. If you click no, it can ask other party members if they want it or to decline, and if they say yes, it can randomly decide between who wanted it who gets it. I understand competitiveness and cuthtroat and all that, but you literally have players stop fighting so they can ninja up the decent items. It's an MMO so groups and parties should be encouraged, but currently, people are flying solo solely for this reason because they don't want their drops stolen. I don't care about junky rare yellows and blues, but when someone ninjas a map, cartographer tool, or the rarer orbs from me all because I couldn't stop fighting for 3 seconds to grab my drop, then it's a problem. The longer timer is probably the easier solution, the other where you can claim your drop or decline it is probably the tougher but more effective solution. Последняя редакция: peachii#3920. For starters, this is not a MMO.
Secondly, not everyone ninjas loot. And last but not least, having a screen pop up would bug the shit out of me. You complain about people who quit fighting to pick up loot, yet suggest you should stop fighting to make a selection. Seems odd. Последняя редакция: SL4Y3R#7487. Время: 20 окт. 2012 г., 19:26:55

Takes 3 seconds to make a selection. Other games have used this system with an option to keep the box minimized and then to look it over AT your time and can make your choice whenever. Maybe if you played some online games, you'd have known that this system exists in many popular and successful games and gets no complaints.
Not an MMO? You got thousands of people playing and interacting in the same world. Not everyone ninja loots, but a lot do, and it's impossible to know who does until they jack that item you have been hunting for months looking for from you. I wonder why you are so hostile about mere suggestions and ideas on how to fix the system? I get the vibe you ninja loot yourself or at least plan to when the game goes public. |

Path of Exile is not World of Warcraft. Full stop. That's the point to be made and the distinction to understand. Path of Exile has been designed to be the very antithesis of popular MMOs, because in part, people are sick of them. Don't believe me? Name an MMO released in the last six years to last more than a year.
Ninja looting has been in every online game to involve a loot system. Adding instanced loot does not actually stop ninja looting. Or is WOW itself even ninja-loot-free? Your proposition does not solve anything. In-fact, I would argue, that anti-ninja-looting-systems actually result in more ninja-looting, because people become skillful in deceiving others and steal very rare items from players by exploiting the systems in place. It's very hard to design a sytem which can't be exploited by a human that wants to ninja. GGG doesn't want a WOW-style loot system for a number of reasons, the least of which because it will be abhorrently obtrusive to deal with when 10+ items drop from a boss monster at once. It's more than "just a few seconds" when you're running in a 6 party group with +100% quantity on somebody. Wouldn't it be easier to just do it like Torchlight 2? Everyone has their own loot and then you can trade later if you want. This would prevent ninja looting. Any reasons that I am unaware of as to not doing this?

" I'm not sure I understand. Isn't that what we have already? Anyway, this discussion should be moved to one of the many dedicated threads to this issue. My Keystone Ideas: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/744282

Is it? Then why do people complain about ninja looting?
I mean for the loot to be yours. As in, no one else can pick it up whatsoever. It is only on your screen. If you find something valuable, then you can tell your party, "Hey! I found <insert item here>" and go from there. Not, an item drops with your name on it but then has a timer on it. And from my experience its not all like that. I have only been in 2 parties however where the other people ran off without me. |

That doesn't solve the issue though. It just blatantly distributes loot to people. It would make grouping horribly un-fun. It would stop complaining to a certain extent (and craete whole other new issues too), but so would what everyone wants, which is a WOW-LOOT system - which I think is a horrible game design decision for this game, by the way.
There should be another kind of loot system for groups, besides FFA, but WOW-style isn't it. And I think it'd be horrible if the game just divided loot up amongst party members. Firstly, what if someone sees an item that drops that's junk to him? He'll just let it sit there. While I, who might actually need it, will never know it dropped or existed. It would require constant communication between me and my party members to find gear we all want, which is very obtrusive and silly. It would be even less popular than the current system. If we implement a WOW-style loot system, not only are there going to be 50 ugly item-roll-UI-boxes filling our screens 24/7, but ninja looting will keep happening. A leader-based distribution system also seems poor, partially because of the volume of items that drop. The current idea makes perfect sense. You only party with people you can trust. You can fairly distribute loot amongst your friends after you've completed and instance. I think GUILDS will be the solution, because then you'll be able to join guilds, which will enforce honor amongst group play. The only thing that can reduce ninja looting and keep the gameplay fast-paced and fun and less about loot squabble, is social pressure. You can't design a computer system that's fair. Only humans can make fair judgment calls about loot distribution. My Keystone Ideas: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/744282 Последняя редакция: anubite#0701. The best solution to the FFA loot system is to have it implemented only in the cut-throat league. This league allows us to fight back against the ninja looters. You steal my loot, I slay you and steal everything from you, plain and simple. If you escape, I will place a bounty on your head in the message board (in-game, if GGG ever implements it) to let other know he is a criminal (not literally, but it would be rewarding to catch them).
Of course, if I cannot attack the ninja looter while in party, I just leave the party there, and shank him/her, and take the stolen loot from him/her and possibly more. It is no fun to see someone ninja your loot and cannot do anything about it. Yeah, I can try to ninja loot, but what would the chances of that happening if that ninja looters continues on that streak? I might as well retaliate there, and kill him off.......for the lulz, and to get my items back. You're not listening to what I'm saying.
There. Is. No. System. That. Stops. Ninja. Looting. If you can design one that doesn't, you deserve the Nobel prize in computer science for designing a computer system which fairly distributes things and is unable to be exploited by a human.
