Fated uniques seem to be future legacy items

Fated Uniques are not the same as legacy items. Fated uniques allow leveling uniques to grow into something greater. This is good! Because it allows certain styles of play that weren't end game viable before, to become end game viable. It also opens up the design space for GGG to do this for basically any unique that they want to.

For example imagine a Fated Princess Sword that gives you +10% physical damage as Extra Cold as well as 10% of physical damage taken as Cold damage. Then suddenly a shitty early game unique becomes intriguing enough to use in the end game.

There is nothing to complain about here. This is absolutely what the game has needed for a long time.

Except if they're only available in Prophecy League, which is 3 months tops, then they are no different from Legacy Items.

For me it's a bit of a double downer, because it's like they're going "These items are desperately in need of improvement, so here's a Legacy buff"

I think the introduction of Fated Items is problematic, if there's no chance to get them in later leagues. I mean, legacies are bad enough.

League system is one of core problems of this game.

GGG in one interview wrote (if I remember well) that they put around the same amount of their resources in developing some leagues as they do with expansions.

Its unresonable to put so much money into something that is not core of game. League system messed the game alot due to many reasons, where the biggest one of them is GGG not knowing what people want from games.

Majority of playerbase left on POE are maniacs, fans, no lifers, white knights that create more characters than there are ants on this planet.
Majority of global playerbase available create in games around 1 -3 characters, dont like to reply something that they did before (example repeating the game in many difficulty levels). The only repeating stuff that most people bare is max 1 hour long, not 500 hours long. Thats where rouge-like games and MOBA games shine. Because when you spend more time on a thing, as a live being you start to get attached to it.

Creating game where workload of develping time goes into stuff that wanish after relativly short time is nonsense - and those are leagues.

I understand that GGG wanted to introduce competition to the players, but its made in a way that most people find resenting. Most people stick to their 1-3 characters and dont see any sense to create new one to replay 90% of content just to expriance 10% of new one that given league offer.

Personaly I rather download new game and expriance 100% of new content than just 10%. Because thats what resonable human being would do.

Additionaly you split playerbase (with is already small, blocking many people joining because "i want to play here and my friend play there, so meh, lets go play other game") into many "servers", you split economy aswell and totally destroy the two main leagues - SC and HC making them obsolete for many people. They should be the most important, actualy they should be the only two leagues existing in the game. You also gate content behind "you either play from start or you cant expriance it" with probably piss off many people.

If GGG had put the amount of workload that they had put into leagues and just added expansions to the game, we would probably have now just two difficulties - less repeating, more content, much higher playerbase, much less developing resources going into void.

If GGG wanted to put competition amongst players they should have created sub-leagues of SC and HC where you can jump in with existing characters and compete on some new PVP/PVE ground with cool mechanics. Now leagues are just competition of who is bigger no-lifer and can level faster than others instead of introducing something new that will test your player skill or just simply giving you something fun and new to do with your friends.

Even if GGG realised that, they are already at point where turning back would be hard. The game had it moment, its 5 minutes, as a new game to play. Many people already tried it and part of them wont try it again even after you change it.
If GGG now switched they would highly risk of losing current player-base that somehow bare with the league system, and they wouldnt have any quarantee that old people, who already tried the game will join it to expriance the possibly new system.

Do you have any proof to back up the myriads of claims you make? And I'm not thinking of any special one because you are making more or less one claim per sentence...

I don't see anything outrageous in the post except the part about maniacs, junkies and hamsters.

- Chris did say in his interview that league design takes a large amount of their development time nowadays.
- I think he's right about most online games having you focus on few characters, not an online game maniac by any means but that was usually the case in ones I did try.
- Putting large amounts of development time into temporary features does seem a bit wasteful, to put it mildly. But I see that they can't cram everything into the core game either, the solution could probably be to rotate major league mods in perma but they don't want to do it because that would draw players away from temp.
- Permanent leagues do get very little development time devoted specifically to them and almost no effort is made to make them more attractive.
- That thing about what would happen if they did the league thing differently is anyone's guess, but he did say 'probably', as with most assumptions in the post.
- He's perfectly right about new leagues being a purely speedlevelling competition, not many other avenues for competitive play if you're into that sort of thing and PvP officially became abandonware (which I agree with by the way, the game is very ill-suited for PvP in many ways).
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

eh ... Some people farm certain items in the league to have them in standard/hc, like i do.
