What the...thing...is actually happening?...I don't even...

Most of the questions are answered by playing the game and by listening to all audio in the game. But keep in mind that the presentation of lore have never been the main focus in these kind of games.

Heh, what's interesting is you can't quote a name that doesn't exist on this forum, meaning Piety links to a player here.
That is interesting. I assumed it would accept any string and not link if it wasn't a name, but it doesn't display anything if there's no character with that name. I've removed the spurious link.

Here's one really simple example of what I'm talking about. Not ONCE does she tell you her name.
I'm not looking to get dragged into an argument on the quality of the writing (I'm not the right person to judge it), but for the sake of accuracy, she does in fact give her name, the very first time you see her, in the upper prison:

You're right; I had forgotten about that. Thank you for correcting me.

If I seem stubborn on this point, by the way, it's because I have very specific memories of my first playthrough of the game. When it's the first time, things stick out that don't during your 5th, 10th, or 20th time. And the dearth of information on Piety was a particularly jarring one, for the reason that--and this is important--Bestel seems to know exactly who she is. If that's the case, why wouldn't he tell your character? He goes on and on about everything else... :P

I'd say your opinion on the writing is as legitimate as anyone else's, with the caveat that a developer's perspective on things is different from an experienced player's perspective on things, which is in turn different (often VERY different) from a first-time player's perspective. (Plenty of evidence of that in this very thread.) Personally, I remember thinking that the story was mostly adequate during my first playthrough, with the setting of the game being the story's strongest asset. My opinion of the story is a bit higher now, probably because I have more of the pieces, because additional lore was added deliberately, and perhaps because most of us tend to become biased in favor of games we spend a lot of time on.

And OP every single NPC in every town has a dropdown with names and places that you can click on and it gives every answer to ALL your questions and more.. And you dont even need to read any of it they give ALL the Lore audio. So you can basically listen to the entire story and learn about everything in the game from all the different NPCs as well as all the ones you run into as you play. Theres also different statues and writings and such throughout the game you will find you can click on to get even more story.

The lore in this game is actually pretty damn good for an ARPG i must say. And it goes very deep into it all.
I can tell ALOT was put into the story and i for one enjoy to lore quite a bit. One of the best storys since Final Fantasy 7.. or 8... or 10.. Well 10 was a little meh at first.. It had to grown on me.
There is a fine line between Consideration and Hesitation.
The former is Wisdom, the latter is Fear.

It's either "You can't read, can you?" or "You don't read, do you?"...

I guess you must also have not completed your elementary school by the looks of it. Sorry.

You just hack it like this:

Ha, that works. Especially considering the icon for Completed Challenges is currently causing a line break.

Actually, you are "Not-a-cockroach." If you listen to Lady Dialla's opening dialog, she implies the blackguards are cockroaches, always scurrying underfoot(getting in her business) in thick hard carapaces(black armor). Kinda makes me wanna farm Ebony Barracks with a character named Bugspray.

As far as the story goes, if you want to pay attention it is there. The dialog, the lore pieces, the events that take place. I remember wondering who Piety was the first time through the game, but I feel I understand her story and character traits pretty well by now. Then again, I listened to all the dialog and most of the lore at some point or another, which OP does not enjoy.

Fine, except Tarkleigh talks about Piety in exactly the same way.

It's pretty obvious that you are intended to know who she is way earlier than you do (and not, as you imply, that they've deliberately made Bestel's dialogue not make sense in order to make him appear loopy), which is the problem I've been pointing to all along.

It's nothing more than an oversight, I think.

Also,

I forgot to mention this in an earlier post, but this is no longer the case for certain classes, such as the Shadow (+others?). So it's a fairly cut-and-dry plothole in the case of those classes. (Imagine that the Shadow is your first-ever character in the game, and the effect that I describe will be even more jarring.)
