POE 2 Complete PC Freeze while loading screen

Same thing is happening to my wife's computer. She crashes either at the load in screen or after selecting a character and entering the game. Hasn't got past that point. Fresh install of Windows (10 22H2) with 2TB of space and 32GB of DDR5, fresh install of game, verified game files, latest nVidia drivers.

Requires a hard reset holding down the start button on the PC until it turns off. After turning it back on, SOMETIMES it starts up again, sometimes not. Eventually, when it did start up, I left it sitting at the Desktop while I took a shower. When I came back, the machine was in blue screen with a QR code and said it was trying to collect data but was frozen on 0%. Hard reset again.

Not only is the game (and only this game) crashing her PC, it appears to be leaving behind some incremental changes (damage?) to the PC that lingers. I plan to try and force DX11 or Vulcan, or if necessary, single threading, but I can't even boot up the machine now to try any of those things.

By the way, it took me FOREVER to log in to this forum because that stupid Cloudfare kept asking me to verify that I'm a human. I had to research the net to figure out how to get around this. What is up with GGG? Is all this a result of Chris leaving, or the reason he is gone? Or something else? (shakes head)

Man, this needs to be fixed.

Use Windows search to find "Event Viewer", then look at "System Reports". Check to see if you see anything related to CPU errors. They will have the red "critical" symbol next to them. Then see if you can borrow (or just buy) a different GPU.

I had this kind of issue before POE 2 came out on a system I bought. The GPU was used, so I swapped it out to test. Sure enough, the issue hasn't happened even once. A bad GPU can cause CPU critical errors, causing BSOD and restarts.

Hope that helps.
Can we get a update from a staff in regards to this issue?

PEOPLE ARE STILL CRASHING AND FREEZING.

PLEASE STOP TREATING THIS ISSUE AS RESOLVED.

I CAN BARELY GET TO THE MAIN MENU WITHOUT CRASHING.

GGG have a fix for 24h2 for win 11. This one automatically toggles engine multithreading on and off on load screens if you are running the 24h2 update. GGG apparently thinks this issues only happens for 24h2 users for some reason.

Might be worth upgrading to this version just to solve this issue.

Otherwise you can toggle engine multithreading manually before every cogwheel, this works 100% of the time but it a lot more annoying to deal with. These are the only two solutions right now.

Sadly this update does not work that well-- I'm on 24h2, and freeze during non-loading screen loading gears. Such as before the main menu, or when opening the atlas at the endgame. I still can't play because of this -- it happens fairly frequently, and seemingly at random- but it's the exact same as before.

Someone made a tool that did similar with the multithreading thinger-- but it also wasn't perfect, as these freezes could happen anytime models/assets start loading, be it at main menu, when clicking between chars on char select, or when opening the atlas. I think I did when opening a vendor once, too.

I'd note too, before the windows update, this game worked 100% fine for me, so im pretty sure its still just the update/game not having fixed it.

Hey everyone. My gaming comp (i9-14900K, RTX 4090) is yet still crashing all the time despite of all what has been offered for fix (here, steam, reddit). Now the funny part is that my old 2017 razor blade laptop has not crashed a single time. 200+ hours with it. And they both have same windows versions.

Now my question is, does anyone know which combination of older prosessor and graphics card has been working most efficiently? Or even without any crashes? My old laptop is lagging so hard if i Juice up my maps and T4 pinnacles are a nightmare with ball lightning.

So after trying pretty much everything (list is too long to mention everything) this dude on reddit solved my problem. By installing Intel extreme tuning utility and lowering p Core to 53 and efficient core to 43, not a single crash in 3 days. Virtual memory increase, shader cache del, lasso, poeuncrasher, vulkan, NVIDIA settings, bios update, win 1123 or all of those other things did not help at all.

So for Intel peeps this should help

My brother.....

After 3 months of extreme pain and suffering.....

You have finally found a solution for me. Can't say how thankful I am. But Intel Xtreme tuning utility and setting p Core to 53 did solve my problem.

UNBELIEVABLE!

Thanks man. I encourage everyone to try. It solved for me.

Couldn't even pass login screen without crashing. Now, I've beenn playing for 4 hours straight, game runnning smooth AF!

Thanks again, cheers.

I'm not a software engineer by a long shot, but what I can say is that when I checked event viewer after a crash, I saw a lot of apps running at the time POE 2 was running, and POE 2 itself, running out of memory, forcing the crash. It was a memory leak/flood. So, it's something to check...couldn't hurt just to make sure.

Insufficient memory in non-paged pool (the part of virtual memory that cannot be swapped with the pagefile) can lead to the Bug Check screen or even total freeze indeed. A lot of many-many-many driver-level (ring 0, including OS kernel) pieces of code try to allocate the memory without checking its actual availability causing Undefined Behaviour (UB) in case they fail. In this scenario, isolated user mode application like Path of Exile 2 can become a sort of "trigger" for the chain of events. Like... the game starts to process the shaders on loading screen, some memory region is being allocated in the System Memory (by the Win32 API) and never freed. Sure, it's just possible scenario and my assumption but it seems realistically.

Fortunately, memory leaks are not something very hard to track down, so I guess GGG would fixed it way sooner unless the leakage is caused by some specific system configuration.

Thanks for the reply anyway. Sorry for the delay.

I can answer that.

If you start "communicating" on an issue like this to the level people are demanding, then you'll see a playerbase believe that they're in charge of the development. They'll start dictating to the developers what they should and shouldn't do, not having looked at a single line of the code.

It's called "community management" for a reason. YOU manage the community. The community doesn't manage you. Just because they're not giving you the feedback you want doesn't mean they're not working on the solutions. It simply means that they need to keep the problem isolated to "in house" so they don't get distracted by a barrage of noise from people who, for the most part, aren't qualified to do the job.

Hope that helps.

+1 exactly!

Timothy_GGG and other 2 GGG devs
Can we have some tech insights of your fixes / workarounds implemented in the code? Probably publish them in the official Questions and Answers?

WHAT HAS GGG DONE IN NEARLY FOUR MONTHS TO RESOLVE THIS HARD FREEZE PROBLEM?
WHAT’S THE CURRENT STATUS?
SINCE DECEMBER, HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAVE YOU MADE TOWARD A SOLUTION?
CAN ANYONE FROM GGG GIVE US UPDATE?
So we can play without hard crash or not? Tell me warriors of the internet !

I don't want to try by myself. The first time I got these crash was in december, and I haven't dare to launch the game since then.
Poe 1 keep crash and freeze like 30 times a day
i do alot things and nothings works
like 150+ configurations found in the web
i quit from poe1 March 14 2025
cpu 13900k
gpu 4070ti
mother board PRIME Z790-A WIFI
For many of you here using Nvidia cards that are experiencing this issue.
Go to then Nvidia Control Panel. Turn off shaders. restart pc.
Press Windows key, type %appdata% and press enter. In the roaming folder, go to Nvidia folder, you will have Compute Cache. Delete everything inside that folder.
Then go to the AppData directory, LocalLow. delete everything inside that folder.
Go to the AppData directory one more time, find the Nvidia Folder inside the Local directory this time. delete everything inside the DXCache and GLCache folders.
Do not delete the folders themselves. Just everything inside them.
Once done, go to Nvidia Control Panel app again. Turn on Shaders. Restart PC.

This will now have cleared all your Nvidia caches.

I used to crash all the time but doing this I have not experienced any game crashes in the past 2 months.

Also I would like to point out this will help fix at least 60% of the Nvidia users' issues on Windows OS' who have posted here on the forums.
