Why are only melee punished by weapon specific skill gems?

That actually doesn't at all address his question. His question was framed purely within the scope of realism; and, purely within the scope of realism, allowing Ground Slam with swords, etc, is no more or less ridiculous than burning, frozen, poisoned zombies.

All we've established, in theory, in the last 22 pages is the identification of the principle wherein disallowing Ground Slam with swords can serve as a small part of a greater schema of proportional variation between weapons with respect to which skills they can use. That by coincidence it might "make sense" to those folks who feel that such a skill is best deployed by a blunt weapon is great and all, but really has no bearing toward that conclusion.

As a counter-example: In my opinion, I think it's perfectly plausible to allow Sweep to be used with two-handed swords, given the nature of the skill and the fact that it already allowed both two-handed maces and two-handed axes (serving to illustrate the thought process behind the skill's effect). Yet I am nonplussed by this exclusion, again under the auspices that this absence serves a purpose under a proportional variance schema.

Still further: In my opinion, I think it's rather cartoonish to allow two-handed swords to use Puncture. Two-handed swords are about as useful as a piercing weapon as my grandmother's tuna casserole. Yet again, allowing this weapon pairing hypothetically serves a useful purpose, distinguishing two-handed swords from two-handed axes, and so forth, within a proportional variation schema. So I shrug my shoulders and ignore the seemingly nonsensical pairing.

Just let the thread die now. It's reached over 20 pages without a developer response and the same argument must have been repeated 50 times.

The thread is done now, so many walls of text that I doubt anyone will bother reading it.

Special mention to -

Xaxyx - The best i've seen at arguing on the internet and certainly is very dedicated to arguing on the internet.

Lostform/Sickness - Pretty sure they've just been trolling 100% of the time, as no one would be stupid enough to not grasp a pretty simple point in over 20 pages, so gg on the best troll i've seen in a while.

His questions about realism are addressed in the thread. And the conclusions drawn is realism is just a by-product of the system designed to create choices and diversity within melee, and the balance between weapon choices and available skills. Realism is a side effect of the process of deciding what skills you want to use, and then finding gear to support your gear choices.

In fact realism doesnt have to be a motivating factor at all in their decisions to make them successfully designed, they just chose that route as grounding.

Anyways, I am looking forward to making another melee character that plays very differently than my last melee character.

He's not my buddy, guy.

Clearly, someone hasn't read the looting thread.

Yet here you are, still reading it. And here we are, still discussing it. Is it really that hard to imagine that the topic is of such importance and/or interest that folks might still want to debate the topic? We're even making progress, too, to my admitted surprise.

The only one still trolling this thread is you. That you created the thread doesn't in turn grant you dispensation to troll it. Consider grasping that simple point before the next time you decide to pop on by.

That's one way of looking at it, yes.

Agreed!

Anyways, I am looking forward to making another melee character that plays very differently than my last melee character.

My friend and I made new melee characters last night, "Living Off the Land" style (no interacting with NPCs, no quest rewards [including the starting equipment!], etc). We fumbled around with default attacks, him with twin daggers or rapiers and me with a huge honkin' two-hander, barely scraping by until we finally came upon an Infernal Blow gem, a skill I'd never even tried before. I popped it on, and -- kablammo! kerplow! skadoosh! It was a lot of fun, charging into the middle of packs and trying to get the guy in the middle to explode, with my friend darting around the edges popping Cold snaps (the only other useful gem we'd found so far).

Oh, I'm sorry, was I ignoring your trolling attempts? That's my bad. Would you like a cookie? Would that make you feel better? I'm sure I have a cookie around here somewhere... *searches pockets*

I have not made a build with infernal blow yet, sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Thinking about making a leap slam, two hand build, going for mainly physical, and use heavy strike or maybe double strike as my single target skill, maybe something like infernal blow with melee splash as my aoe, and lightning strike with life on hit for those 'I aint going over there' moments, could end up being ground slam (I have 3 unique two hand maces to use all the way up).

but may end up with an axe towards the end:
