Why I won't be returning to PoE

Howdy folks, veteran player here. I quit playing PoE ~2 months ago. I have multiple L80 characters, and had been playing quite some time.

However I got sick of losing hours and hours of gametime due to a single death, often caused by the lag/latency issues. I did the math and realized if I got into the 90's, I'd lose days of gameplay time (I can only play evenings).

Even with the recent adjustment, the penalty is far too harsh for anyone who is L85+. Why would I want to play a game where a single death (my fault or not) when I'm not playing hardcore removes hours or days of progressive gameplay? Is this EVE Online?

I have no incentive to return to PoE because of this, no matter the new content that is added. While I understand this game focuses on multiple characters and builds (which I have done), not having the freedom to pursue a build I prefer to "end game" without a massive burden of guaranteed loss just isn't any fun; and that's why I play games - to have fun.

While Chris and his team have done a fantastic job of creating a solid product (which is fun until you hit the higher levels, then it's just stressful), their special catering to the hardcore players (and even defining softcore play by hardcore players, which is ridiculous) is unfortunate and will ultimately result in the loss of a percentage of gamers for a sustained period.

Any game designed where you can (and often do) end up worse off than when you started out due to general gameplay mistakes has a fundamental flaw. PoE has this flaw, and it needs to be addressed. Until then, I won't be playing - and I know many others who feel the same way (many of my friends quit due to the penalty, and like me - won't come back because of it).

Chris & team - you guys need to wake up on this issue. Your hardcore gamers are < 15% of your player base. It's foolish to listen to them for defining softcore gameplay rules and penalties.

Many players including myself have offered solid viable alternatives to the current penalty system that would work very well.

If you want PoE to be as successful as it could and retain a high percentage of your softcore base, please address this issue.
All that and a bag of chips!
Pursuing a build TO end-game is one thing. When you start talking about getting into the 90's, you're going well BEYOND that. The game is currently simply not designed, nor intended for most people to get much past the early to mid 80's. As new content is added, this will probably change but as things are now, "end-game" for all but the most absolute hard-core players IS somewhere around the mid-80's. This is already well beyond the level of the highest maps or items in the game and there's no real NEED to go beyond that currently.
Well you have to remember they are designing the game they would want to play themselves. They are hardcore gamers, so you should expect a hardcore game. Also, desync cannot be fixed. No matter what, there is pretty much no answer to desync, other than offline play (which they said they won't do).

I personally don't like this statement. You write that "general gameplay mistakes" can put you in a worse position than you originally were. Why shouldn't' they? What's the point in playing a game more than 3 hours if every move you make is inconsequential, and you can do literally do whatever you want? Sure, desync is a dick, but there are ways to combat it through gameplay. This game is more about learning, planning, and adapting. It's not just hack slash loot.

Clearly this is't the game for you. Oh well, goodbye. To each his own I suppose.

thats what ive been saying for months and months now, but they dont and wont listen so the game is gonna be dead soon.

you are not the only one leaving. everyday more and more people leave and the so called release will even kill this game faster then they think. after release a lot of fresh players will join poe and soon realize this game has fundamental flaws, and then quit.

just like you said, game is fun until you hit level 85+ .. then its becoming punishing and less to no rewarding ... worst game design ever in end game plus dsync = game will not live another year ...

No worries OP. This game will be all but completely dead in a little over a year.

The refusal to deal with the Gesync and lag issues WILL KILL this game. GGG and Fanboys can continue to make excuses. FACTS are other games do not have these problems because they are smart enough to design around them. They KNOW it would kill their game. GGG is insistent on learning the hard way and learn they will.

This is plainly an ill conceived statement. He clearly stated that he enjoyed the game. He said that he had very high level characters. That cannot be done unless he played many many hours. I don't think he played many hours of a game that he didn't enjoy! A game that he didn't get into, a game that wasn't for him.

It seems clear to me that he is trying to improve the game by explaining the reason that he no longer plays in the hope that the developers will "fix" THE problem that he has with the game. I can sympathize with this position because I share the same opinion. PoE is a great game. I've brought up two characters to the seventy level. I'm not interested in hardcore. I want to play the game, relax and have fun. Right now dying costs me less than an hour of play time but it is still very frustrating and makes the game frustrating rather than fun. In my opinion it reduces the fun because of the frustration and discourages me from experimenting with different things and ways of playing.

I suggest that the developers accept the statements in the way they were intended. That is a heartfelt attempt to improve the game for more casual gamers. I think the current death penalty costs the game far more players than it draws in. There is little doubt in my mind that the last time I play this game it is likely going to be because of this same issue unless the problem is fixed.
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!

You can't handle leveling a toon to "endgame" ? You understand "endgame" is more repetitive farming right ?
You've replaced your natural work ethic with this game. It's not a job. You're not owed anything for the time you spend playing it. You don't "lose" anything when your character dies.
