Plea to devs to address the sexism

I bet your wife didn't say shit later when she saw the big floppy dongs waggling around in her characters face.

Honestly, this thread from reddit today says it all http://www.reddit.com/r/GirlGamers/comments/1q6ry3/have_any_of_you_ladies_ever_been_excited_to_play/?sort=top
The topic is basically "games that were very exciting, but so off-putting from the sexism that you had to stop." POE is the most upvoted.

To add my own 2 cents, I really like POE, and I'd love to play it with my wife. She's tried, but being FORCED to look at 2 sexualized slave girls chained to her health and mana bar makes her feel uncomfortable. I can't blame her. Is this necessary? Could there not be an option for an alternate UI for people who are uncomfortable with the girls? It would be a very small thing, and it would be a clear message from the devs saying "Yes women, we care about you too, and want your business."

I shudder to think of the money we've spent on LoL, so I sincerely doubt it would be any different for PoE. It is obvious from this thread my wife and I are not the exception. Why say no to more people wanting to spend money on this game?

Kind words are really not enough at this point. "We don't mean any offense, this is just style, it's OK" will not bring women and couples back. Only action, and obvious action specifically aimed at rectifying some of the wrongs, will even have a chance at bringing people like us back to this game.

The devs choose to do it this way they didnt think "WOW LETS MAKE THIS AS SEXIST AS POSSIBLE" in mind they did it because it fits the dark tone. So no it should never be changed stop playing if you dont like it and dont fucking whine about non existing problems
these are one of the types of people that bring the world down the overly sensitive people that cry about everything. Example, i dont like horror movies they make me feel sad and scared so i guess im gonna go watch paranormal activity i mean i like the main actor but the fact that its a horror movie makes me sad and scared i just have to take to the forums and write some dumbshit noone cares about.

my wife just said the best thing about this... "Apparently, the game is offensive to ugly women. They're also offended by victoria secret models."

That quote is full of win. Please say "thank you" to your wife in my name for making me giggle :)

She went on to say, "The whole world objectifies women. Can't expect a game that's all about killing to be PC."

The world also objectifies men. Maybe not sexually, but look at any movie or video game the majority of people getting killed in mass media are male. Not saying that's a problem I'm cool with that because these things are what they are, entertainment.

However, I think it's hypocritical of people to complain about nudity whilst being seemingly ok with men being slaughtered in the media en mass.

OP is hilarious. Can't wait until he and his tender shrew get to act 3 naked vagina statues or mutilated nude torture/experimentation victims. If they thought those statues over the Health and Mana globes were bad... Hahaha.

Me personally, I'm glad GGG team doesn't belong to the hyper Politically Correct crowd of wimps who cry foul jumping at shadows and making mountains out of molehills. This game is partially inspired by and the spiritual successor to the first two Diablo games which were dark and gory and not afraid to show some female sexuality. It all fit together well in those, and in this. it's not for everyone, but for those who appreciate this kind of game, we love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh, and League of Legends doesn't have 'over'-sexualized women in it's art? Heh.

Go play Care Bears Online or Disney Princess Universe or something for your cleaned up, wholesome fun. Down here stuck fast in the muck of Wraeclast, we like it dirty. Come get dirty with us or tuck your tail between your legs and wimper away.

But mutilation and torture is A-OK according to the mighty moral values of the US-of-A. I'm sure she'll be fine :)

Also, seriously, there are naked male statues all over the game as well. How exactly is having some female ones being sexist? I was also under the impression they were drawing a lot of stuff from Greek aesthetics. So, just, this is so minor. Everyone today, Jesus Christ, get the fuck over it. Everything is a sexist issue, everything is a racist issue. [Removed by ADmin][/b]

I <3 you.

I'm a female, I can't say I've ever noticed the art on the orbs. I mean I've looked at them, I've seen them but when I am playing, running around, talking in chat I don't even notice them much less focus on them. I'm not the least bit offended and don't want GGG to change their art style. Some super sensitive females may be bothered by it but I'm not in that camp and never will be. I vote for more whips, chains and naked girls please.

I never noticed.

I mean, the critical information is inside the orb and on top of the orb. THe orbs themselves are in an area you don"t really focus on.

So... yeah... I never noticed.

And now that I am looking at it. I see nothing that could bring up a debate about sexism.

The Marauder in game is wearing even less than either of the women on the UI. Furthermore, the Marauder, Bestel and Tarkleigh (among others) are all showing their nipples while the female characters are not.

I can't speak for your wife, but for many of the women I have known, this issue has very little to do with being uncomfortable with sexuality while it has a lot to do with control.

Controlling access to sex and sexually themed material is something a lot of women do, yet they will seldom admit it.

When you are a fly on the wall, amongst women who forget that you are there or think you can't hear them, you will be amazed at what women will talk about.

They tend to be far more graphic and detail oriented than men. They evaluate, critique and focus on sexuality to a degree of explicitness that men generally do not.

There are exceptions to this, of course. There are people who are sensitive to any kind of sexualized material, but then those people would also be bothered by the nude statues and ..

They would be far more bothered by the nude/semi nude TORTURED bodies on the racks.

Yes, the interface is constantly there. Changing the chained people to men would just alter the "victim" of sexism.

Please re-read the Reddit thread you linked. Count how many times the "fairness" minded group points out male nipples being frequently shown where female nipples aren't.

If they want to talk sexist - they can find the baywatch scenes where Pamela Anderson is only wearing a bikini bottom like David Hasselhoff.

They can say "full frontal" all they want, but the number of non-porn big screen movies where an actual V-jay jay is shown on screen (and not just the pubic mons) is probably in the single digits compared to movies that actually show male genitalia.

Sexism? No, this is a control issue, plain and simple.

Someone usually has most of the power in any relationship. Ideally, this would be the mentally, emotionally and developmentally strongest person in the relationship, but IRL it doesn't always work out that way. A lot of relationships suffer because of the way one person wields the power.

If indeed the thread you linked from Reddit says it all, then GGG must also put some of the male characters and NPCs in dresses, (from the linked thread):

Let's also analyze another post from the thread that "says it all"

One of the poster's states:

If they were both simply naked it would have been a little irritating to me, but ignorable, (why two naked women when classical art OFTEN featured naked men) but here is the biggest issue to me:

The naked women are clearly slaves.

They are clearly well-fed, in a land where resources are scarce and many are starving.

They are clearly well-maintained, e.g. no scars or wounds or ratty hair or skin blemishes.

They are clearly not very muscular.

The mana orb woman in particular is arched back against the orb in a way that presents her breasts.

To me, then, it is obvious what kind of "work" these slaves are put to. Now, my methodical outlay of this may make you think I "overanalyzed" here. No. I saw the women, and had a little rush of discomfort and thought "sex slaves!" Then, when other people said "Naaah, they're not sex slaves!" I went back and looked at them and noticed all these little things that made me realize that yes, I was correct.

So, following the logic given, the poster would not have been bothered as much if the UI orb supporting women were starving, beaten and neglected?

IMO, when someone finds glamorous sexuality more offensive than sexual abuse, they have lost their sense of perspective and are in no mental condition to be making judgements about others.

Insecurity, control, latent hostility - these seem to be the mantra of the reddit you linked.

There are all sorts of fairness issues on all sides of this issue in real life, and the imagined ones tend to drown out the real ones. When too many people cry wolf, the public (including juries) becomes desensitized, and real crime and discrimination end up going unpunished in too many cases.

Fighting for justice is a great thing. Fighting against imagined injustices is a bad thing.
