Plea to devs to address the sexism

Honestly, this thread from reddit today says it all http://www.reddit.com/r/GirlGamers/comments/1q6ry3/have_any_of_you_ladies_ever_been_excited_to_play/?sort=top
The topic is basically "games that were very exciting, but so off-putting from the sexism that you had to stop." POE is the most upvoted.

To add my own 2 cents, I really like POE, and I'd love to play it with my wife. She's tried, but being FORCED to look at 2 sexualized slave girls chained to her health and mana bar makes her feel uncomfortable. I can't blame her. Is this necessary? Could there not be an option for an alternate UI for people who are uncomfortable with the girls? It would be a very small thing, and it would be a clear message from the devs saying "Yes women, we care about you too, and want your business."

I shudder to think of the money we've spent on LoL, so I sincerely doubt it would be any different for PoE. It is obvious from this thread my wife and I are not the exception. Why say no to more people wanting to spend money on this game?

Kind words are really not enough at this point. "We don't mean any offense, this is just style, it's OK" will not bring women and couples back. Only action, and obvious action specifically aimed at rectifying some of the wrongs, will even have a chance at bringing people like us back to this game.

The Marauder in game is wearing even less than either of the women on the UI. Furthermore, the Marauder, Bestel and Tarkleigh (among others) are all showing their nipples while the female characters are not.

I can't speak for your wife, but for many of the women I have known, this issue has very little to do with being uncomfortable with sexuality while it has a lot to do with control.

Controlling access to sex and sexually themed material is something a lot of women do, yet they will seldom admit it.

When you are a fly on the wall, amongst women who forget that you are there or think you can't hear them, you will be amazed at what women will talk about.

They tend to be far more graphic and detail oriented than men. They evaluate, critique and focus on sexuality to a degree of explicitness that men generally do not.

There are exceptions to this, of course. There are people who are sensitive to any kind of sexualized material, but then those people would also be bothered by the nude statues and ..

They would be far more bothered by the nude/semi nude TORTURED bodies on the racks.

Yes, the interface is constantly there. Changing the chained people to men would just alter the "victim" of sexism.

Please re-read the Reddit thread you linked. Count how many times the "fairness" minded group points out male nipples being frequently shown where female nipples aren't.

If they want to talk sexist - they can find the baywatch scenes where Pamela Anderson is only wearing a bikini bottom like David Hasselhoff.

They can say "full frontal" all they want, but the number of non-porn big screen movies where an actual V-jay jay is shown on screen (and not just the pubic mons) is probably in the single digits compared to movies that actually show male genitalia.

Sexism? No, this is a control issue, plain and simple.

Someone usually has most of the power in any relationship. Ideally, this would be the mentally, emotionally and developmentally strongest person in the relationship, but IRL it doesn't always work out that way. A lot of relationships suffer because of the way one person wields the power.

If indeed the thread you linked from Reddit says it all, then GGG must also put some of the male characters and NPCs in dresses, (from the linked thread):

Let's also analyze another post from the thread that "says it all"

One of the poster's states:

If they were both simply naked it would have been a little irritating to me, but ignorable, (why two naked women when classical art OFTEN featured naked men) but here is the biggest issue to me:

The naked women are clearly slaves.

They are clearly well-fed, in a land where resources are scarce and many are starving.

They are clearly well-maintained, e.g. no scars or wounds or ratty hair or skin blemishes.

They are clearly not very muscular.

The mana orb woman in particular is arched back against the orb in a way that presents her breasts.

To me, then, it is obvious what kind of "work" these slaves are put to. Now, my methodical outlay of this may make you think I "overanalyzed" here. No. I saw the women, and had a little rush of discomfort and thought "sex slaves!" Then, when other people said "Naaah, they're not sex slaves!" I went back and looked at them and noticed all these little things that made me realize that yes, I was correct.

So, following the logic given, the poster would not have been bothered as much if the UI orb supporting women were starving, beaten and neglected?

IMO, when someone finds glamorous sexuality more offensive than sexual abuse, they have lost their sense of perspective and are in no mental condition to be making judgements about others.

Insecurity, control, latent hostility - these seem to be the mantra of the reddit you linked.

There are all sorts of fairness issues on all sides of this issue in real life, and the imagined ones tend to drown out the real ones. When too many people cry wolf, the public (including juries) becomes desensitized, and real crime and discrimination end up going unpunished in too many cases.

Fighting for justice is a great thing. Fighting against imagined injustices is a bad thing.

Move this thread to suggestions and let it die.
This thread makes me sad.
I've played for over a year now I belive and I've never even noticed these naked women on the globes.
I had to log in just to see what it was all about, now that I have I'll use an internet expression to sum it up: "WTF" ?
Move along this thread is plain dumb.

Agree. So it can just die already... Ugh.

Tc hasn't even posted since like the second page. His wife probably has him locked in a closet or something.

Personally I really do not see the issue with this. They're artistic statues of beautiful women in a pretty normal medieval style. The pose of the woman on the mana globe is similar in pose to that of the head piece of a ship. Any nudity here is not sexual, but artistic: there are no overly disproportionate body structures or provocative sexual actions.

What seems to upset some people is the chaining of these female statues. Personally, I feel this fits well with the theme of the game. Your character has been taken from the world of normal society, then thrown off a boat onto an island full of criminals and low-lives banished by their government -- not only that, but those of authority look to torture, manipulate, experiment on, and kill potentially dozens of thousands of people for their own twisted goals. The juxtaposition of these statues intended as a thing of beauty at their time being crossed with the dark treatment of individuals in this new world fits very well with the game's atmosphere.

At the same time as I disagree with this being sexual at all, it would be nice if people could be respectful of the topic creator's opinion and not insult someone who does not necessarily agree with you.

i dont think that having 2 drawings of women around the mana and health globes is sexism. how about having 2 muscular dudes with boners instead?

Maybe you need to study feminism a little bit. The op has valid points and its something that remains a strong problem in a variety of games today. The original Witcher title prompted you to attain cards of "sexually provocative" females and they were heavily criticised for this. Although, this example is a lot more tame, it is still in some regards, objectification of females and as such could be seen as sexist.

There are two forces of evolution -

1) Natural Selection

and

2) Sexual Selection.

Once any species has a comfortable margin of success over the first one, the second becomes more dominant in shaping the species development.

Interestingly enough, how many scientific articles on various species mating rituals/breeding choices use "sexism" as their explanation for how and why they evolved to make the choices they do?

Or do they use terms like "most fit" "best adapated" "Best genes"?

When you bring conscious and social thought into this formula, obviously some things change, but not all of it does and claiming that all of sexism has to do with ignorance and nefarious motives is dishonest.

Enough is enough. What th fucks happened to these times man. Everyone's become pussies. Never had these problems in the John Wayne days. Worlds become way to PC and overly sensitive. What ever happened to , if you don't like something just shrug your shoulders and move along. Everyone's gotta express their feelings, or bitch about something, damn hipsters .
Let me tell you all something , worlds full of fucked up shit. Child molesters, serial killers, school shootings, global warming, terrorism, rhinos going extinct , boobies are th least of our worries.
It can not be sexist when there are as much nude ripped shiny dudes as there are perfectly sculped nude women. I love the hypocrisy when people accuse others for sexism when them selves are the sexist since they have such a narrow view of the world that they ignore the fact that there is none. They just: "WTF. there are nude women in this game. Fucking sexist devs man."

This is clearly a debate for mediocrities since they like to discuss a debate that does not even exist. Normally I would not take part in such a intellectually humiliating thread but of pure rage I feel I have to straight things out.

Also I feel pretty embarrassed needing to point this out: the sculptures are needed for the theme of the game. They give the feeling of ancient rome to add to the other things like dominus and brutus for example since rome is a huge part of the ancient history.
Complains about semi naked statues in the form of art, yet doesn't comment at all about the prevalent tortue and violence

Yup, nothing to see here
Haven't read all 20 Pages, but did anyone even bother to Link what all are discussing here about?

So now, please explain to me, the caveman I apparently am, how this is so offensive?

I sit right in front of my 80" TV and I had to start the game to even remember what they look like.

Exhibit A: There is as good as nothing shown, the pose isn't 'sexual' either. I would like to think people are not even discussing this side.

Exhibit B: Skin is shown, the important parts are covered. The pose is a bit submissive, this one, we may could argue about, but still, I don't really see it as 'sexual'.
Maybe If you get turned on by dirty slaves in chains and/or S&M. And like I said. Everytime a thread like this comes up I have to start up my game to remember what they even look like.

Woman, no offense, bu if you really want to step out of this 'victims of sexualization' role you should start looking at things objectively and not start shouting 'victim' at every shit.
Take a look at society. Naked skin is a part of it nowadays. From Man and Woman. For you the semi-naked girls in on the health/mana orbs may be more offensive than the big naked male statues because of history reasons. But you can't go judging shit with history old mindsets. You have to judge it on todays standard.
