We hate to say, but ProjectPT was right.
There seems to be a lot of confusion here between build diversity and skills diversity with some added chaos damage of gear diversity.

I can choose a witch (and always do) and I *always* find myself with the following choices:

1) Fireball & General fire specialist.
2) Spark & General lightning specialist.
3) Freezing Pulse/Ice Spear/shot & general cold specialist.
4) Minion Master.
5) Physical Wander.
6) Critical Daggers.

Then there's the choice multiplier of CI or Life. So that's now 12 choices.

And these are just the cookie cutter builds. You can take the Witch anywhere on the board and do anything with her, but the above are the 'prime' directions a Witch would go to in order to fully immerse yourself in the R of RPG.

You could have your Witch Leap Slamming with a Two Handed Axe or Poison Arrowing with Acrobatic finesse - but that's not really immersing yourself in the R of RPG, that's kind of like being silly for the lolz of being silly, or spotting a potential exploit etc.

In D&D you could be a Druid who spec'd themselves into a Two-Handed Tank, but if the game was limited to 20 levels, you're just lolz'ing with the game because the rules are not designed so that a Druid will be a Two-Handed Tank - they do not get the Bab bonus or weapon specialisation feats or apt increase, which is what makes a Two-Handed Tank a Tank. If there was a spell or feat or equipment which permitted a Druid to gain those advantages, then yes, exploit found.


But my Witch with 12 specialised choices is still a Witch. I can't dual class or multi class. I can't give a different race, not even a different gender. I can't give her a coven sect or specialised guild membership.

I'm still a Witch. I'm just a Witch using different 'skills'.

So this question of build diversity in PoE is more about skill diversity really.

But then... with people who talk about build diversity in PoE, are they actually meaning skill diversity because in PoE it's the skill which defines what a 'build' is and not the build which defines the build?
the problem is that op didnt talk about real problems in build diversity

he didnt talk about overpowered builds

he didnt talk about one of the biggest problems (imo)- lots of builds needing lvl 80+ to fully be realized, thus leveling with the most efficient skills usually (ST, used to be ele cleave). if you want to be a summoner or wander or CI vaal pact discharger, level as ST first.

he didnt talk about hp/es pool being a must have

ie, he didnt talk about real problems of build diversity in PoE as applied to endgame or even merciless+

he talked about not finding gear with sockets to fit his skills. which is a joke unless we talking about 5L+ items and offcolors

A skill it only a small part of a build. There is many things varying builds that use the same skill such as :

- Build defining uniques that make the character play differently.
- Skill gem combinations of course.
- Passive skilltree pathing determining if you're speccing into crit, elemental damage, physical damage, aura based character, bloodmagic, stun based character, block based character, CI, eldritch, acro..etc.
- Your other skills which compliment your main skill can differ one build from another.

I respect the fact that you can fail in PoE. Too many games are too easy and have no choices, especially RPGs. I played WoW for 6+ years and every build was cookie cutter. There were certainly parts of WoW that I could never reach having a job and family, but I still enjoyed the experience, and the same goes for PoE.

PoE has a nice variety of stuff and I can even farm some maps which is enough for me. I also like the fact that I have to learn how to be better instead of just face rolling the keyboard. I may never have 6L item, and that's okay. If everyone had them, there would be nothing left to obtain, and you would stop playing. Making things hard to get, even if it's just RNG, makes it a more rewarding experience, because it's the journey to get something that is the true reward.

This is true for me because I had a hacked WoW server where I could experiment with other classes, gear, and builds. There was no reward for me in having a legendary item if you didn't follow the steps to get it. Unlike my priest's epic Benediction staff where I had to grind molten core in 40 man raids, and quest for quite a while before I earned it. This same phenomena is shown in study's of people who win lotteries, which conclude that most lottery winners are not any happier, many actually end up worse off. Think about any time you enter a cheat code into a game, my play time pretty much stops almost instantly once the challenge is gone.

No hard feelings if you don't like PoE, it's not for everyone, but it really does do well at many things and takes some of the best concepts in RPGs. It also provides quite a bit to a good range of players.

I am sure GGG is in business to make some profit, and it's a good model to give away a free game, with optional micro-transactions and donations. So, why complain about a game that is essentially free?

If you're going to be that pedantic, then even the most basic RPG game will have 'endless' build variety because a simple fighter could be a Sword+Shield, Two-Handed-Sword, Dual-Wield Swords, Bastard Sword+Shield, Bastard Sword Two-Handed, Short Sword+Lonsword OMG I can't even be bothered to think of all the *variety* any RPG has in 'builds'...

And then you say if they wear a different item of clothing...

IMO having gem sockets tied to equips is so fucking pointless.

You can have the best gear in the game and it's 6L, but colour bias says fuck you here's a wall for 10000 chromatics.

The "difficulty" in obtaining the right colours is a different kind of "difficulty" associated with getting good gear.
