What is your honest opniion about Grim Dawn compared to POE?

I like GD very much but I recently realized that a team of amateurs with no big business connections to speak of (GGG) have made a much better game overall than a well connected team of veterans (Crate). How can that be?

GD has potential, but the animation and the limited diversity makes it a "short" game.

I'm not a big fan of Grim Dawn, but are you aware that the limitations you speak are mostly the result of the game being a beta with a low level cap ?

When lv35 was the cap, it was severely limiting the number of viable builds.
With lv40, it's already much better.
When level cap will be at least lv50, the number of builds will be huge.

I like the big open world of Grim Dawn.
The loot system and structure is interesting, but I'm a little disppointed by the slow pace of the game, and the very high cooldowns of most skills. Also, lack of character customization, and equipment looks dull.

Last point: the dev team must be very small, because the beta has been lasting forever.
People may be bored by the time the game is actually released.

It's different from PoE where the open beta was actually polished to the point of being a non-official release.

grim dawn is cool but boring af. PoE all day eer'day

GD is basically Titan Quest re-hashed. and I dont mean in 'PoE is D2 re-hashed' way. GD is from the guys who brought you TQ, with most mechanics pretty much the same.

so if you really liked TQ, you should already have played GD.

GD is a good game. However, the main problems for me are

1)currently it lacks replayability and

2)development is going extremely slow for a game that doesnt require a lot of balancing, network issues (pretty much its single player game, barely anyone plays multiplayer) or other hoopla.

while #2 is mostly a rant of sort, because good games are good games no matter how long they take to make, the #1 is a big issue with me. now while I enjoyed TQ it was never close to Diablo to me, so maybe TQ fans will feel otherwise.

what do I mean by lack of replayability ? it's not that you cant have builds in GD, in fact you can have quite a few.

but there are no really random generated maps besides objects like secret areas which either appear in point a or b or c. gameworld is always static

the endgame consists of farming SOT (which is tough, nice experience, however its pretty long, therefore players farming items just farm bosses quickly) and bosses. it's quite repetitive and honestly, way more boring than any POE endgame activity. but, just my opinion- I was never fond of D2 boss runs either.

GD is also a game where mechanically, while a lot hangs on procs, there are breakpoints where your build becomes GOD build and nothing really can fuck with you. sure snares stuns and such can hurt, but there wont ever be an *OH SHIIIIIT* moment like in poe where a nasty pack of base monsters get paired up with totem rogue exile a nemesis aura and a blue bloodline pack. there isnt a ton spiky damage.

its very predictable. the most unpredictable part, is, like someone on here already mentioned, is sometimes its hard to understand what hurt you.

there are countless balance issues too but for a non-competitive game I think its not a big deal. nightblade skills are insane, for example, and its clearly the strongest class so far with current lvl cap. just like any TQ or D2- like games where you have skillpoints and skill tree/progressions, a lot of skills suffer from 'either 1 point in it or full points in it or none in it' paradigm

overall though, I recommend at least playing through the game. ARPGs dont come out often, and good ones dont come often at all. and this one is dark enough and engaging enough you might like it or really like it.

as it is now, the games not done, but youd have extremely good idea of what to expect.

as far as I stand, I like this game for making ~5 builds, but it kinda lacks of replayability.

well, Crate was in disadvantage because a single player arpg will always be less popular than more mmo-like arpg like poe.

Crate also stuck to the old concepts, which works when you have a universal brand (like starcraft, for example) that is a cult classic. with all my respect to TQ, it wasnt really an 'amazing' game, at least to me. it was a 'cool nice game played it a few times, worth my money, wont be replaying it much' game to me.

in todays age, a game like TQ wont sell much or gather many accolades. which is fine, but really, TQ couldve used a ton of improvements, and there are very little deviations in GF from it, to my liking

also, doesnt help Crate develops things VERY slowly.

as to not make another post, I want to address clunky combat in GD. I actually feel combat feels much more intuitive and nice in GD- GD is way more of a melee-friendly game.

However in PoE the speeds become retarded in endgame with all nodes, GG items and multistrikes/echoes. GD is more 'slow and steady' approach. Either way works, honestly. It's fun cycloning on crackspeed in PoE and its also extremely satisfying having your dual wield skill AOE proc and FEEL truly smashing the shit out of a hero and a boss in one shot in GD
I feel as though I am someone who has plenty of experience with this question as I have played close to 1k hours in POE, and close to 600 hours in Grim Dawn.

Both games offer plenty to the RPG genre, but they are not really comparable whatsoever, so its sort of hard to compare the two.

GD for me has a lot going for it.. its being developed by a tiny team, so progress has been much slower than your typical game, but the content is there. The gear and ui is good, the score/music/sound is VERY good, and the environments are great.
Where GD loses its lustre for me is the enemies.. they are fairly underwhelming. The animations still to this day are lacking, and the bulk of the skills are pretty meh. The game does get quite challenging though, and there is huge potential to mod the game the same way that TQ was.

As someone who backed the game and wishes for it to become a big game, sadly I don't believe that it ever will reach any high playerbase. Its a bit too same same in my opinion, and in many way does not innovate in the ways that POE has.

Despite all of the knocks against POE (I definitely have my fair share of things in POE that drive me crazy) it still has innovated in and of itself.. with skill gems, a huge passives tree, build diversity.. I mean whether a build succeeds or not, there are still plenty of ways you can go and experiment.. although GD has split classing, it still is fairly basic compared to POE.

GD imo will be more interesting once they include Legendaries.. as it is now, only Epic weapons are the highest tier available.

So, perhaps it would be best to revisit this question once both games have released all their content.. I mean, even POE still hasn't put out Act 4 right..

well PoE has all content. the full content was at release. these additions will always be added to the game, kinda like DLC additions

whereas crate imo really needs to work faster and finish the actual content.
POE got this:

Absolutely, mind you its unfair to compare POE and Crate in that way as well.. GGG is not a large team either but its at least 4 times larger than GD's team, so obviously GD is a slow process.

That said, I even said on the forums that I've stopped playing because I simply can't keep playing the game when content is being released that slowly.

Also, I worry for them that by the time the game is actually fully released, who is going to play it? Sure, new players will find the game, but people like myself who have helped beta test it now for months are going to be completely burnt out.

I had burned out on POE, but now with Act 4 coming out, I've gotten back into it and have enjoyed the new content.

Too bad there are still some things with POE that most likely will never be fixed.. these items prevent me from truly calling the best RPG there is.
I played it with friends and I had fun with it. It was a nice distraction when I was taking a break from PoE. I see myself playing it again eventually when I want another ARPG run with friends that is far different from PoE.

I don't see it as any kind of long term game that I'll be playing though, like PoE. A part of that actually comes from the online nature of PoE(Go figure, I thought we all hated that.)
