is The Shaper a fair fight? discussion

The Shaper fight looks challenging but fair - I'll be giving it a go within the next week.

One part of the fight I don't understand from watching videos, is, in the third Shaper phase, how do you tell the difference between the Shaper and his clone?

I'm just looking at this, thinking two things:

1) well done!
2) how is someone supposed to do this in HC?

EDIT: please read second post.

Not sure if fair - if you check cospris malice build is tanking laser and doing shaper in 4:15 min.

The question is what is fair cospris malice or shaper?
I have tried to fight the Shaper twice with an Armour/Life Crit Lacerate build and failed at his 2nd phase. Mainly because I got too many vortexes to deal with at one point. The adds were also a bit too beefy for me and most of them did get to Zana before I manage to kill them. She didn't always die from them, but it was enough to notice. Sadly I cannot practice this fight as much, since it basically costs me 1 ex each time I want to try it :(

Now is this a fair fight? Well for the most part, in my opinion I would say it's a decently fair fight, despite the one-shot mayhem most Life based builds have to go through. Most of his attacks can be fairly easy enough to dodge if you know what to look out for. His teleport move can indeed be a cheap shot for low mobility builds, as it requires you to move fast either by a high movement speed or Whirling Blades/Shield Charge skill to get out of his way. That move only killed me once, but that was my fault for not realizing it was coming and fast.

However, I will say that the fight could use a tweak or two. From what I've seen in this fight so far, it looks like a strict DPS check because of the vortexes and the adds and I think only a select few builds can actually take the Shaper down. My suggestions for this fight are:

- The vortexes could use a tweak. Maybe either let the vortexes disappear after a set amount of time or limit the amount of vortexes that can be on the field. Or maybe combine the two and remove the most first placed vortex with the last one that just popped once the cap is reached. Sure we can manage them by popping them around the edges and corners and that's the strategy around it, but with all the stuff that's coming at you, at one point there will be too many to handle and then, only builds like CI/Vaal Pact BV can survive it because they can facetank it while being in the middle of it and leech off the Shaper faster than the Vortex can kill them. Plus I always seem to find that one stray vortex orb that will wreck my run.... More about that later.

- Tweak the adds a little bit. DPS in PoE is a big thing, yes. But those adds are another DPS check by itself. Either make them less tanky or make Zana less squishy, is what I would suggest.

- Remove whatever vortex orbs are still following you around when the Shaper does his bullet hell attack in where you need to have Zana protect you (Or make them stop following you while this happens and let them continue when the attack ends). The area in which Zana protects you is relatively small and one well placed Vortex is enough to mess that entire part up for the rest of the fight. Remember that one stray vortex orb I said I always seem to find? :P Yea

So that's my 2 cents for this boss fight. Needless to say, it's a very exiting fight and I would really like to defeat him one day. But given the cost of the fragments and some of the mechanics will become unfair if your DPS isn't insanely OP, I can't do this fight as much as I want to and it's a shame :(. I've had my fun with the Guardians, and my fair amount of deaths, especially with the Hydra requiring my last portal to barely finish him (I will do better next time. I just didn't dodge the guardian's attacks well enough). Every other guardian killed me once or twice, keeping in mind it was my first time trying them all and I was still getting experience on what they do and all. Loved the expansion and I hope to see more of this in the future.

The shaper is entirely fair and MOST importantly predictable. Having done the fight more then 60 times. I can say this with 100% surety with 2 exceptions to this rule both involving the same extraneous circumstance.

Exception 1.

During the 3rd phase shaper will choose to do the "bullet hell" move and zana will make the bubble rarely (only happened one time but after the latest patch) the clone can hover around for a moment and may have cued up the laser / death balls move.

You can be caught having to be inside the bubble and the clone will do the laser / death balls at you while you are inside with nowhere to go after which he goes invisible/inactive until "bullet hell" sequence finishes.

Exception 2.

After shaper has done his "bullet hell" move he will nearly 100% of the time move directly to a laser move. During the 3rd phase if the clone and shaper both have laser cued up and the "bullet hell" purple death balls are not totally gone yet, you can be caught between a rock and a hard place having both the clone and shaper do a laser at you while there is still deaths balls active.

Both of these circumstances the first exception have only happened to me once and the second twice. But it does happen.

no it is not
I think the big thing is getting familiar with the flow. As people have mentioned it's predictable. It took me three attempts it get the rhythms and flask management together.
Man I remember I thought this fight was fucking hard and I even wrote a thread about being carried. Some kid even made fun of me good memories.

Haven't done Shaper at all but if anything I hope they could make it so the Vortex Fields that get created eventually dissipate as this does still hamper/destroy certain builds against the fight.

I thinks its fine because its only for 2% of players, and those players are a maniacs anyway. Hell, i remember early Merveil from act 1 , who made me drop the game some years ago. And dont forget Merveil from tier 5 map, who oneshotted anything. Tier 5. And you know what, alot of players defended that. Lol

Finally managed to defeat the Shaper after 4 attempts. My verdict:

NO. It is not a fair fight. There are at least two instances that result in certain death.

1) If your build is not strong enough to defeat each phase under 2 minutes. There is likely an occasion whereby he vanishes into his Armageddon form to dissipate purple blasts across the area and you must cower under his daughter's protection. Then two offscreen void balls wiggle their way towards you and cover up the entire dome Zana has to offer.

2) While Zana calls for help to help seal the Breach, Shaper's wannabe might fire at you to force a manual move from you to dodge. This short action time is already enough for Zana to die and you lose all protection from her for later on.

3) His weakest move is actually his melee slash which we can force him to use by hugging him at melee distance. This might not end well as he still can choose to use his energy canon that kills you in an instance.

Overall, this boss, unlike Uber Atziri, deserves a modification and reduced timing for at least three or more of his skills to be considered hardcore worthy.
