"Jew" as abbreviation for Jeweller's Orb

The abbreviation used for Jewellers' Orbs when setting trade prices in a public stash tab is "jew", which is goofy, awkward, and even a little offensive. I get that it's common forum parlance, but it's likely to be uncomfortable-making for anyone who's not bought in to forum culture.

Procurement uses the more reasonable abbreviation "jewel", which fits just fine. The likelihood of confusion with passive skill tree jewels is low, given that skill jewels are not interchangeable in value, and the feedback is immediate when selecting Jeweller's Orb what the abbreviation pertains to.

It may not be a bug, but it is under GGG's control. The jew abbreviation is displayed in game, so they coded it that way. I was actually a bit surprised the first time I saw it since they actively tried to discourage the use of that abbreviation awhile back.

Ahh yeah. It does say "jew". Thought the only way it could actually say that was from a specific note. I was more concerned with the fact that it was posted in the bug section, when there is no bug.

eh... it's only as offensive as the amount of how much your mind interprets it as something offensive (dk if i phrased that correctly). Hence bringing you into the state of being offended. In all honesty, a jew in this game is the abbr. for a jeweller's orb, that is all I see it as. No one making trades here is using it offensively to be interpreted in the sense of enslavement/trading of a particular group of people.

IDK what to tell you, but to calm down man....there are much bigger issues in this game...seriously. Nothing that is in the art of the jeweller's orb resembles anything close to that of a Jewish person or something of their religion/icon etc.

If you are seeing a Jewish person pop up in your head everytime you trade and use some jews that is the result of your mind being corrupted by society and the interactions you've had with the said community you live in. Nothing more, nothing less.

The word "Jew" is not a bad word. It describes people who follow Judaism, in the same way the word "Muslim" identifies those who practice Islam. It's repeated over and over in a popular Adam Sandler comedy song, for fuck's sake.

So in order to find the abbreviation offensive, not only do you need to drop the context - it's obviously an abbreviation for "Jeweller's" - but you also need to be offended by the mere mention of religious terminology. In a game with angel and demon wings as microtransactions.

The best I'll give you is that the use of the abbreviation does break immersion somewhat. The theology of Wraeclast doesn't include any real-world religions, and it's natural for the mind to wander in that direction due to word association. I do find it a tad annoying in that sense.

The word jewel/jeweller came into being from the market manipulation and near dominance of jews in the gem and jewelry industry.


Shortening/abbreviating words happens all the time, deal with it.

Well jew is still used as an insult propably as often as "autistic kid who is unable to get a life".

It's odd and I think this one game up before, but honestly it actually wasn't created by GGG they just took the abbrevation that people already used. I assume it could be similarly offending to use trans short for Transmutation Orb, but the context makes it pretty clear that the intent is to describe the currency item without using too many letters.

Jew is not a bad word. There are bad words for jews and jew ain't one of 'em. It is short for Jewish.
