The abbreviation used for Jewellers' Orbs when setting trade prices in a public stash tab is "jew", which is goofy, awkward, and even a little offensive. I get that it's common forum parlance, but it's likely to be uncomfortable-making for anyone who's not bought in to forum culture.

Procurement uses the more reasonable abbreviation "jewel", which fits just fine. The likelihood of confusion with passive skill tree jewels is low, given that skill jewels are not interchangeable in value, and the feedback is immediate when selecting Jeweller's Orb what the abbreviation pertains to.

This is a major issue. I'm going to add my voice to supporting a change to this ASAP.

perhaps it was mentioned somewhere in the 4 pages i declined to read but proper capitalization provides a clear distinction between the meanings.

ITT: ppl who need sensitivity training. by which I mean: how to be not-so-sensitive. :P

I want to cover all my bases, tho, and say: if there is going to be a politically correct -washing of this issue, I propose the new abbreviation be "JO". plz let's not make it anything more cumbersome than it currently is. assuming "JO" doesn't offend anyone, right? :P

And as a side note I've never bought or sold anything worth some number of jewelers so I wasn't aware of this, thank you thread made me laugh for a bit. :)

At PleiadesBlackstar: I think we've juiced whatever we can out of this conversation. I already showed there's additional context in my first reply, it's probably going to just boii down to agree to disagree here. Thanks for engaging in conversation, and sorry for the "annoyance" part (I didn't think anti-offended people could actually experience any negative emotion from discussion, they usually seem to present themselves and the ideal person as unflappable).

May continue the discussion if I think of another different way to word it or additional circumstances not yet considered. 2nd shopping trip of the day has just started :) in that case, I would say thanks for the discussion so far and I look forward to continuing it!

Wow, that's actually a thing? I thought maybe the quoted poster made it up since I found no mention of it when I was googling jewel etymology for my initial reply addressing this. Yet another saddening fact if such a rumour were able to propagate at all.

As for the word "autism," my instinct is telling me that you're fighting a losing battle. The reverse euphemism version already seems ingrained in the minds of many gamers.

I think perhaps any hope of saving "autism" from the likes of "dumb" and "retarded" would probably have to start early, in elementary and middle school. Of course, discouraging improper use could continue up the education chain, but we all know high schoolers will do whatever they want, on average.

In any case, I've tried to cut "retarded" from my vocabulary as much as possible, and it seems to be working. But I'm antisocial to begin with and what friends I do socialize with tend to be fairly liberal, aka they, too, realize the harmful nature of using "retarded" in that way.
