What are your thoughts on the current amount of death penalties in game

Utter trash. Worst game design I've ever seen in my life. And it is making people quit en masse.

More than half of the players gone in 1 month of EA, and I don't even wanna know what chunk of the current numbers are just bots lol

Also according to steam numbers the game was peaking 350k last week, now its sitting at around 250k-270k max. People are either finally finishing campaign and leaving for the next shiny new game, or they reached endgame and saw how horrible it is and just how much this game utterly disrespects the player's time. Like this kind of stuff just isn't going to work in 2025. Losing exp on death? Are we in the early 2000s of MMOs again? Forcing Softcore players to play in essentially Hardcore every map because they lose it on death? Wow that sure is a quick way to make people quit your game. Softcore players choose that mode because they hate the idea of losing hours of progress on-death, or even losing any progress at all on death. How is this so hard to understand?

This game does everything in its power to double-down and kick the player while they're down with all these meaningless, outdated death penalties. They all need to go yesterday.

Losing a boss invitation that took you hundreds of hours and like 700 maps to farm up because a "gotcha mechanic" happened that you've never seen before? Guess all those hours you spent farming citadels were for nothing and you don't get to learn the boss at all. It's so bad I don't have the words to describe it.

It all either has to change and be made opt-in, or put into a hardcore mode or whatever. If it doesn't this game is going to keep losing players. Literally just let people choose if they want to play with these death penalties or not, difficulty settings are some of the most basic things in any game and seems like PoE 2 is in desperate need of some.

I agree with every paragraphs of this comment, it's cathartic. I feel like I am playing some difficulty old NES game without a save. The lack of respect for the player's time is enraging.

POE2 is not a better game by making us waste time when the game is more than a 200 hours long to complete. GGG should work on a decent crafting system instead of making us rely on the shitty trading system to get good gear, especially while leveling.
Death penalties are no problem for good players who invest some thought into what they do.
I'm fine with all death penalties except when fighting pinnacle bosses. I feel you should get 6 portals, but the boss will be full health again after you die.

This is not uncommon for very popular early access titles.

Manor lords lost 90% of players in 2 months.
Pal World lost over 90% of players in 2 months.
Enshrouded lost about 80% of players in 2 months.

Also, it's not that weird that there's a dropoff when the holidays end. Most people went back to work the 6th of january.

I was watching someone play Ghosts and Goblins. A game that I tried a hundred times to beat as a kid. Just stupid difficult and unfair, for no reason. It's like it wasn't even play tested, and the guy that made the game wanted to piss people off.

PoE kind of reminds me of that. I keep making characters, I get to about 85, and then quit out of frustration. How many times have I done that now? 30?..

Those old games were just punishing, because they didn't know how to make good games back then. And it felt like PoE just fully embraced this aspect of video games. The frustrating part. The unfair part. The unfun part. The XP loss on death mechanic is a relic from old games, when they had no content, and had no better idea's. So they implemented it to pad your gametime.

Tired of seeing everyone saying that we're asking for an easier game too. People just don't want to be frustrated. Put all the challenges you want in. Just stop kicking players in the nuts every time they die.

One thing that the super punishing nature of the game did that I really don't like, is it made the "ESC to char screen" into the single most useful defensive skill in the game.

"ESC to char screen" will not save you from one-shots obviously, however if practiced (and in the current state of the game every player should practice it just as much if not more than dodge-rolling) it is a savior in countless occasions and personally I think it's not too elegant of a design.

The upside of using "ESC to char screen" in maps is so insane it dwarfs any defensive skill one might have on the bar. It's always the "right play" as opposed to trying to dodge-roll and maybe still get hit, or trying to use some evasive skill and maybe still get stunned and killed in the process. With "ESC to char screen" you're always safe, you can always come back to the map, no punishment and no rush.

Because of how punishing death is, I would call "ESC to char screen" a FUNDAMENTAL, next to dodge-roll, defensive action. All players should always practice their reflexes on using it, and I don't think it makes for a clean design. If that is to stay at least let me keybind it like any other skill to where I can click it the fastest.

If i recall correctly, the death penalties in POE 1 were as follows:
10% Exp loss
loss of map after 6 DEATHS used
loss of fragments after 6 portals

The current death penalties in POE 2 are as follows:
10% EXP Loss
Loss of map after 1 death
Loss of mechanic (ritual, expedition) after 1 death
Loss of basic map boss
loss of fragments
loss of loot

Still nothing, absolute zero compared to hardcore, which people seem to be comparing it to. Also just normal stuff, you're in endgame and really built, when is it supposed to get hard, later?

Its why hardcore has log out macros and a lack of build diversity. IN what way has adding all of these punishments for death improved the end game?

Logout macro is an euphemism for cheating. If you "logout macroed", you're not playing hardcore anymore, you're playing a coward afraid of death in video game.

The punishment improved the meaning of failure in the game, a very important part of what a "game" supposed to be.

In POE 1, if you over juiced a map, you could go in there and nip at it and at least leave with some loot to recoup your losses, here, you look away from your screen for a second a die and poof thats it. Cat jumped on your keyboard? Whelp there goes all your investment. Why must the end game mapping process be so sweaty?

Yes look away and you can die, like any self respecting game since forever that wasn't a participation trophy mathematical lawnmower simulator.

after hearing jonathan talk about the xp penalty in the interview with ghaz and darth, can be heard here btw

i get why he wants the xp penalty for the lvl100 race, hes probably right.

Then turn it off as soon as somebody hits 100.

Balancing the game around something less than 1% of the player base participates in is crazy.
Death penalties are awful and combined with the inconsistent goofy ass difficulty and tuning of enemies and encounters, it makes the entire game absolutely suck to play past level 90 or so.

As in like... I really want to play, then I log in, quickly die to some nonsense, and then have absolutely zero desire to play anymore. That's a fixable problem.
I wouldn't mind IF it wasn't so easy to die.

Standing in a puddle for .5 seconds, dead. Also, you can't see the ground at all. Also, mobs will body block you in the puddle. Also, if you kill those mobs, more death puddles.

Instead of being excited about killing a rare, I'm scared to loot it.
