So melee still sucks, can we get a comment from GGG?

Hi

All I play is melee here are the problems I have noted:

1.Chaos damage scaling to nodes that can prevent this let alone nodes close enough for melee to reach
2.Armour feels like cardboard
3.Drops not good enough to sustain a player, forced to trade/grind for orbs/save orbs never using them till endgame.
4.Merciless/Map/Exiles damage scaling is too steep compared to rate of ''useful'' drops/players 1 skill point a lvl to cope with.

Suggestions to fix this:

1. Add more chaos resist to tree/increase chaos resistance on nodes already.
2. Re-work armour mechanics
3. More orb drops allowing player to not constantly worry about saving orbs/ rework MF mechanics
4. Add a new keystone perhaps something that allows a player to block with 2h weapons besides using staffs implicit chance to block, remove IR it is useless now.
5. Fix the damage scaling so it follows a steady survival curb/balance
6. Better communication with fanbase

melee needs to be able to stack as much MF as ranged can (or mf needs to just be removed from the game). melee just can't rival the amount of MF these builds can get and still be competent at endgame mapping. also melee can't even say it has the edge in survivability since well geared casters using hard hitting tempest shield and life leech is doing the same thing as aegis aurora based builds but better because of the thorns and shock and whatever other on hit effects you want to give it.
studying for GGG's C++ technical exam...
The only problem i have with melee builds in general is that i always feel so squishy that i feel the need to take all possible defense nodes available while only taking max +-5 real damage nodes. And these nodes must be really good to even consider about taking them.

I would like for example to try out a crit build. For a normal marauder build when you could start to invest in those nodes you´re like level 65-70 because you needed all those life/resi/armor nodes before starting to skill in damage(in my opinion).

So when you start doing maps i would/could start to invest in accu and crit nodes. Realisticly, for me personaly, would be something around level 80+ timewise. That are only 10 points left i would need to share betweed accu and crit nodes.

This is a special dilema i´m at atm nonetheless those thought concept is mostly a problem in all "my" build ideas.

I play 2h a day before sleep. Leveled my char in aroound 20h to 70, 20 more hours to lvl to 80 and gear up for maps. In this state I was ready to farm maps. In 60 more hours I saved up 18 exalts and bought 6L chest. After that I don't care about mods. Pls note I farmed my 6l as a melee on maps. All this solo or duo with a friend.

This is such an atypical scenario that I don't even know where to start...

I guess with the fact that approximately 95% (yes, this number is entirely made up, but I'd wager money that it's pretty close to accurate) of PoE users will never even see 18 exalts worth of currency in their entire game career in PoE.

You got lucky. Very lucky. So insanely lucky that I find it hard to believe.

And I suppose if this is your first experience within PoE I can't fault you for saying what you did, like everyone should be able grind out 15+ exalts worth of currency in a matter of days. But you should know that there are a TON of people, myself included (as a CI sporker no less...), who spend 3-5 hours a day farming and haven't gained that kind of currency over the course of MONTHS.

So no, it's not as easy as you make it out to be, and I'd wager if you had to do it all over again you'd probably have a vastly different opinion.

Maybe you do something wrong ? Because you know all this came from crappy rare sold for alts and traded to exalts. Also ocationals trades of good items for around 3 gcp each in general. Never we got insane uniqs dropped, no shiv or khaoms. GCP from gem recepie, chaoses from item recepies.
110 MF on me and 300 MF on my friend who did finishing blows on rares and bosses. 5-10 minutes per map, no map reroling, going on the mods we got with alch. After my 6L for 18 exalts we spent around the same amount of time and bought him 6L lioneye glare for 19 exalts.
Also as we play only 2h a day, 60 hours is a month of real time. And that benefited us because that was a lot of spare time for ppl to buy our gear.
Luck is a jump in wealth, there's no luck involved when you get lower currencies worth exalt after every 3 evenings you played.

Here's how melee and ranged should be balanced...
  • Frame One: ranged shoots mob, mob is still alive; melee is moving towards mob.
  • Frame Two: ranged shoots mob, mob is still alive; melee arrives at mob but hasn't done anything.
  • Frame Three: ranged shoots mob, mob finally dies; melee uses melee AoE ability, entire mob is one-shot and dies.

No other adjustments are necessary; melee's drawback will be closer to damage therefore taking more risks, but its benefit will be sometimes the monsters come to you, increasing killspeed.

This is exactly how myself and everyone on my FL who has decent gear has acquired it; very few people actually get that crazy Shav's or other crazy expensive drop.

Everyone complaining about melee being bad either has no idea how to optimize their builds, no idea how to itemize, or blows all their small currency on stupid shit and can't afford any decent equipment because of it. And optimized builds doesn't mean cookie cutter; I'm playing a Phys Crit Cleave HP Shadow, which goes against a lot of the current meta for melee builds, and I'm having no problem doing my 74 maps so far.

Melee sucks and will continue to suck until GGG gets rid of the armor malus vs. high damage attacks.
At least the 20% gem recipe discovery represents a boost to melee, considering how many melee or weapon skills scale amazingly with quality. Now 20% melee splashes aren't just a pipe dream!
