Problem is, bosses in PoE have adds. They *must*, because otherwise you would run out of flask charges, and GGG designs the game more and more around the utter necessity of utility flasks (not just life/mana flasks) for survival. Therefore, the single- / multi-target division becomes useless for balancing melee vs ranged, because multi-target-viable skills are almost always necessary, even against bosses.

In this way, GGG may have designed itself into a corner. De-emphasizing flask-based gameplay might help, but I honestly think it's too late for that. It would also piss off all the players who have become spoiled by the power flasks give, and don't want to give it up.



*Most of these arguments are dumb when talking about D2, because immunities made single-element builds incapable of soloing a lot of the content, but for the sake of comparison to PoE let's ignore that fact, shall we? Or just compare PoE to cow levels in D2, where immunities were less of a problem.

The problem is GGG totally painted itself into a corner when it allowed ranged characters to utilize the same defensive mechanics as a melee character. That's the much bigger crux of the issue.

And if Aoe of Melee is buffed, and Ranged is nerfed. Double the range of Melee splash for example, and provide more options for Melee skills to get AoE effects.

This is ARPG where melee and summoners are unplayable, yet they allow casters to go god-mode all the time.

As of 2.4, you can finally one-shot the entire screen with Discharge and clear any map in 30 seconds, while their solution for melee is give Glacial Hammer a 6% buff. #balance

I'm actually more upset that the list of decent ARPGs is so small than I am that melee sucks in this game.

GGG is on record for having employees who think that life-based is superior to ES already. It was on the lioneye's podcast with chris wilson, where he said that the guy who designed the shaper fight sees it that way. So really there's no reason to be surprised if someone over at their offices thought that melee is fine.

Of course someone's tempted to jump out the hedge now, and yell that it's just the other builds being OP, while completely ignoring that being ranged is simply mechanically stronger than melee could ever be. There is no fucking place for melee in this game anymore, unless it's some CoC shenanigans with Cospri's. Like, the game has been designed away from melee for like years, basically.

Ggg is also on record as saying they are ok with some gems being shit, and that they basically won't fix individual melee gems because melee "needs a full rework". And that buffing individual gems like glacial would screw everything up when that rework occurs.

Of course said rework is nowhere in sight so basically it's just posturing. As far as I can tell they don't have any immediate plans to fix melee and it's going to be this way for a long time.

Bug Fixes:
People were using cyclone for actual melee builds, so we nerfed it and made blade vortex. Also, we went ahead and made cyclone great for CoC casters while we were at it.
