Is DESYNC - really - that much of a problem? Really?

Desync is the reason this game has such a low population compared to the competition. This game is otherwise a masterpiece.

I don't think this is truth.
This game is pretty damn good, but it's learning curve is quite steep. it's not very casual friendly.

PoE dont wanna be Casual friendly. Its a Game made for Hardcore Player (not meaning the Leagues) since the first hour.

We were discussing this in guild chat actually. I was in my most desync-heavy area, Battlefront, and dying repeatedly to what would definitely appear to be, to the untrained eye, teleporting Blackguards.

I personally do not experience that much desync outside of certain areas, and I *play* builds that incur it -- I love movement speed, I love kiting. I love your idea of using the terrain to one's advantage.

The problem is, the gain right now to me is not worth the loss. Sure, we can play 'duck and cover' but that's no use when you're not quite sure where the enemy/s you're trying to duck and cover from actually happen to be. To me, this is a promise of tactical play totally undermined by unpredictability and randomness.

So the chat in guild was really about how much of this desync-incurring terrain we could lose without losing the so-called tactical play. There are some areas where desync is just going to happen -- we can't lose Knockback, for example. But if we can identify any area where something can be done and the overall experience is improved, I think we should consider that an option.

So I'll repeat: I ONLY desync heavily in Battlefront. I firmly believe it's some perfect storm of the needlessly labyrinthine layout, the bulk of the blackguard models/groups and the AI pathing.

Does a Battlefront even need to be such a contrived maze of pickets and crap? Seriously? I like the idea of dungeons as mazes because you know what you're getting into. We're used to that from Diablo onwards. But an outdoor area serving as a junction between three others AND meant to portray the actual 'front' of battle should not be so forcibly tortuous.

It's almost as though we're working through trenches that don't even have to exist. The picket fences make no thematic sense -- the ribbons are fast-moving and likely have no trouble winding their ways into these arbitrary enclosures.

I'm not saying get rid of all terrain detail. By no means. Detail brings a world to life.

But when that detail encroaches on the fundamental idea of an enjoyable/challenging/fair game play experience, it's probably time to rethink its implementation.

Use decoy totem, black guards desync because they spot you on server side before you spot them on client side. Just like rhoa's in mud flats. A decoy totem totally neutralizes that fact.

Since you are utilizing heavy movement skills and the client/server update remains the same, you are actually giving the blackgaurds more chances of noticing you on server side without you noticing them on client side until it's to late.

There is no real way to combat this for GGG, since they would have to update between server and client more often so you get updated more frequently on enemy positioning. the only thing they can do is increase rubber banding.

About area patting, this seems to mostly increase desync if you skip mobs and don't clear an area. Like in fast races. The underground before ledge has the same issue if you rush it in a race. You think you travel true a clear patting, while on server side 2 mobs block your path, 5 seconds later you are stuck surrounded by mobs.

There is an easy solution to this type of desync(and they actually improved there coding for this particular case already) and it is to make all the paths wider, in essence decreasing the scenario of a trap where you get surrounded on server side by mobs.

tl;dr use decoy totem, move more slowly = bye bye desync

Edit : posted this is another thread, maybe it can help some more readers of this thread

About desync/fixes :

The one thing that i like about it is that you can improve your gaming experience by considering it while you play. I personally use a number of tricks to counter desync.

1) Decoy totem, your little friend vs desync, entering mud flats? Never leave home without a decoy totem, you will never be charged by a desync rhoa ever again.
2) "Stand still and attack" button, link it to something comfortable that allows you to play and have fun, my favorite is space bar because its huge and a very little hassle to manage while playing.(this should be mandatory for every melee player imo, or you are putting yourself true unnecessary stress)
3) Use curses, not just to curse, but to confirm your enemy is where it is on your screen. If he does not get the curse icon above his head, obviously he is somewhere else server side.
4) Don't skip mobs, one of them might stun you with a lucky crit/normal hit and cause a server side rubberband.
5) Use /oos when you feel something is off, or you are in doubt. Better to type it then to die, and there is no need to spam it. If you use the before mentioned strategies you will have to use /oos maybe 1/2 times in 3/4 hours of game play.

Hope these help for players that have issue's with one of the core flaws of the game. It's a hassle but i am very glad i can actively protect myself against it.

Is desync a problem? Yeah, it is. A bigger problem than 100 straight hours played without finding a single sellable item? Nah. A bigger problem than how appealing crafting looks before you realize what a waste of time it is? Nope.

I've felt the wrath of desync, gotten upset, and eventually re-rolled, but dropping 62ex into crafting an item with no success whatsoever, and having to buy more Exalted purely with Alt Orbs because the drop rate is so pitiful has me looking for a different game.

The thing is: You shouldnt FORCED to do your Tips to have a "Nearly Normal" game experience!!!

Noone of us should forced to make a oos macro, or wear a Skill he dont whant (decoy for example) or Curse somewhere to just "check" if the enemy is there or not.

So dont come with "tips how to fix desync or lesser the chance" its a core Problem, and its not OUR JOB to find a way around!

Our Job is to play and fuckin enjoy this game, nothing more!

I get cancer everytime i read: "just do "insert random wannabe sulution here" to fix desync"

God damn, since when is a player forced to do a developers job? Man i just wanna play and sink my Money in this Game, when im enjoyed. End of Story.
Desync is a huge issue with an otherwise amazing game, not only does your character desync but mobs desyncing as well just make the gaming experience too frustrating at times, eating a ton of aoe damage on an overtuned map boss and youre trying like hell to leech back life but then he teleports 10 yards away just makes me want to uninstall.

Boem was just telling you how to enjoy the game until desync is fixed :)
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
The thing is, i dont have a shit clue about how "worse/hard" it is to get rid of this Problem. Only someone how make Programs itself can tell me this, but thats not the Point.

I just ask me, when i desync, why? Why this shit doesnt exist in d2/d3/marvel Heroes/torchlight. Its just, man fuck, this game is the best arpg i played after d2. Nothing else come close to it. That what i personally think. But this desyncs sometime...

I wanna drive with my car to criss then, and yell at him: MAN DUDE, HOW CAN U LET RUIN THIS SHIT, SUCH A GREAT GAME?!!?!

But well, maybe it cant be so "easy" fixed as i think, because i have no fuckin clue about how it works.

Rly chris, i name my first baby after you, when you fix dat desync :)

Edit: Promise!

irrelevant.

It's completely relevant. In my experiences over the last year, there are bigger problems than desync. Annoying as it is, I have learned to 'deal' with desync. I am level 87 in Nemesis right now, still surviving desync, and it isn't my biggest problem with this game.

The op is asking if desync is a problem, which is relative to other "problems" with this game, which in my opinion are more glaring. So yes, completely relevant.
