In Chris's interview I think he said there are about 2.5 million accounts (I could be way off), granted many of these belong to the same people, so lets round down to 2 million, I doubt half of us have been hacked, but I will take the "millions" as hyperbole and say yes, lots of people have had issues.

The thing is if you are using an email that you used for anything else, anything at all, there is a chance it is compromised. You could be gone for months, but that email is still being used to, in my case, log into facebook (yes dumb of me I know, it's why I dont blame GGG for my loss) it can be compromised and then it gets sold to someone who just happens to try it here. Chris has stated they get tons of attmepted log-ons with emails that do not have accounts. The "hackers" probably try them in a bunch of different games and in my case, they found one that worked, picked it pretty clean, and went about their merry effing way. I can't remember my old WoW account, but chances are if it was the same email I've been picked clean there too unless they can't get by the authenticator.

I remember the most popular comment in Daiblo 3 forum weeks after release: "should have bought authenticator"

Sometimes more than half of topics were about hacked accounts. LOL

So many dumb people.

If your wallet is stolen while you're shopping at a store, you're not going to blame the store. The store has their security, and you have yours; if your wallet gets stolen it's your own security problem, not the store's.
I haven't heard of anything at all wrong with GGG's security; if you think there is something wrong with it, what proof/reasoning do you have? Being a new development company is completely irrelevant. Do you think they're hiding their problems from us despite being a very up-front organization? Accounts get compromised for all sorts of games and it almost never relies on exploiting the game's security. Accounts get stolen because people are not careful enough with their own practices. Not that one person's experience is solid proof of anything, but I've never had a password or account stolen for anything, ever. Not for a free service, not for paid games, not for free games, not for e-mail — nothing. This has been over the course of 14 years of considerable internet account use.

Why? I'm careful about what I do. I don't use bad passwords, I don't share passwords with anyone, I don't run programs that may be problematic (or if I do I'd run them in Sandboxie), and examine account-related e-mails quite carefully. One doesn't need to do a whole lot to be safe, but they do need to be mindful.

Make a gmail account w/ an insane password (you can have your browser remember the p/w)and link your PoE account to that with https://www.pathofexile.com/my-account/change-email
Use gmail 2-factor authentication and make your PC a trusted source, then link your cell/home phone to verify untrusted source access.

That should work till this hacking shit is solved.

If their system was compromised the hackers wouldn't have had to hack accounts,they could inject any items they wanted,assuming they had a full DB access.

Rhetorical or not,that is actually your fault,these days usually it's people that are careless that get their CC/Phones stolen.They tend to take out their phones/wallets/bags put it somewhere while they're looking around the shop or w/e(I work in a shop,trust me I've seen lots of situations like that).

Despite me saying that,the two comparisons are absolutely unrelated,yet even if your CC/W.e. is stolen,you will less likely to get your money/phone or w/e. back,unless the police found the thief,you can actually get your money if you tell your bank to charge the money back,but that's also illegal,since you will be stealing from an innocent 3rd party.

The email thing is fairly easy to hack. One outdated tool is SmartKey Password Recovery Bundle.

I use an email that is not web based meaning you cannot access it through a web browser.
