Warning if you get hacked GGG will do nothing to fix it!!!

I got hacked probably in a similar way. Even posted about how sad I was that I knew GGG wouldn't give stuff back. Personally I feel the economy portion of it is understandable but also EXTREMELY frustrating. It's like saying to me, "sorry you lost your stuff, but at least someone else is enjoying it", tack on a "sucks to be you" and that is how I felt... NOW saying that I do understand that just like people cheat and buy currency, they would cheat and lie and duplicate items. Cheaters in one way or another always ruin it for the honest people.

Anyway, getting to an actual question:

Is there a reason that our log-in IS our email address? Does this make us less or more secure? If our email gets compromised it's easy for the bastard on the other side to request a password or even enter the verification code sent if you log on from another computer.

I have never been hacked in another game, and I never felt I had to take so many precautions to avoid it. Granted I have stepped up my security now but it's too little, too late. Yes I continue to play the game because I am a casual player, lost some decent level 50ish items, and a bunch of junk, but I can work my way up again. If I were serious player and played on HC I probably would have quit.

I love this game, and I feel the progress the Devs make with everything else is fantastic. I would like to see better security on their end, and they have said they continue to work on it. If you haven't already done so please do this to keep your account "safe", make a brand new email account for this game, make a long password, and maybe change that password from time to time. I don't want anyone to get hacked like I was because I was too lazy to make a new email and memorize a slightly longer and more confusing password.

and to bigpieceofchicken I agree you are doing it the right way, but if you get hacked I feel like your account will be the last of your concerns considering the thief probably took your computer, TV, stereo, God knows what else, oh and the index card.
I can see your / Back is turned and / If I could I'd / Stick my knife in.
Crawl Away, TOOL

Don't get hacked. Make a new email for your account and use a long password.

and you don't "get hacked", you simple get your account stolen

being hacked the fault wouldnt be yours, which is wrong

it's your fault for not taking care

Everyone knows this. The word "hack" just works better in more tenses and forms than "stolen". Specifically, "hacked" happens to you while "stolen" happens to your account. You can say "I was hacked" but you can't say "I was stolen".

Thanks for bringing up this tired old internet distinction though. Fly that battered grammar Nazi flag high, bro.

This has relatively little to no effect on your security. If your email account were hacked the problem of this game is the least of your worries actually; no game you would have signed up for (since you sign up for all games via email) would be protected without "security questions" which don't really protect anyone because you can just go around them by emailing customer support and reverse claiming that you've been hacked. Keeping the customer happy > Keeping the customer safe usually.

The odds are if you've been hacked in this game, or cracked, or phished, or otherwise compromised here you got lucky elsewhere. The fact of the matter is most people get "hacked" by their own actions, or lack thereof, thus they suffer from their mistakes. People may have been less interested in compromising you, which in turn means that instead of you being safer, you just got the wake up call here instead.

In short: It was eventual due to your habits, just be happy it was a f2p game and not your bank account.

GGG we need an authenticator. Gibe pls.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

But considering you have your password written on a piece of paper next to you computer doesn't exactly make you a king of data security :)

I live alone. The passwords are too nutz to remember. I'd rather do it this way w/ a password that can take years to break, then make it easy, but memorize it.

edit-I read the other replies. Now, you guys are being super-paranoid. I don't leave my password card out for the world to see. Physical entrance thieves would not care about a PoE passsword. Not like they'd find it anways. I should write my passwords down in a counter-crypt Sanskrit using an enigma machine so I don't lose my 6 exalts?

You silly goose what you do is you do both!

Take your password of 16 letters.

Take a pattern of 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 4 - 1 - 3 alternating between "forward and reverse" notation.

Password: 1234567890123456

Encoded:1 32 4 765 8 2109 3 654

Written down you would know how to break it up.

No one else would.

There are more complex versions of course; this is an example.

YET I DO NOT DO THIS?! T_T

so do you think they took your items back from the people who stole them or they just duped the items/gold you lost and inflated the economy? as the above poster stated, that would have less of an impact when most of the things are soulbound, but that isn't the case here. and as many others have stated, it's very easy to abuse this kind of system and use it as a duping method.

And yet these games that do item restoration are not driven into obscurity and closure because of it. It’s like a miracle, isn’t it?

Besides the fact that I personally doubt enough people would be willing to game the system to have an actual effect on the economy, why is the possibility of it happening the end all of everything?

Here are some suggestions:
-Allow a user only one restoration in a given period of time (6 months, year, ever, I don’t care).
-Look to see what IP address was logged on when the theft occurred (protip: if it came from China, it was probably a hacker and if it came from the same IP address that has been playing the game for the last 6 months, it was probably an inside job).
-Look to see what IP address received the goods and where they went from there (protip: if the goods went through an RMT mule, they were probably stolen and if they went to the same IP address as some dude on the victim’s friend list, it was probably an inside job).
-Intentionally delay the item restoration process by a week or two. I know I'd be much less willing to fake-hack my account if I knew it would mean that I couldn't play for two weeks. Especially effective would be if they froze the account during this time.

Are any of these suggestions foolproof? Nope. Since account creation is free, someone could create a new account to bypass the one-restoration rule (downside, you lose all your characters). Or they could use IP spoofing to cover their tracks when they give all their gear to their buddy (downside prohibitive amount of effort and technical knowhow). And the last one just requires patience to wait out. But suggestions like these would limit the number of people who would try to scam the system and still allow innocent players a bit of relief when they’re a victim of account theft.

Really, I don’t think fake hacks would be a big enough issue to really give two shits about, but steps could easily be taken to minimize the risk.

Blizzard doesn't care about the state of their game, they only care if the person who got hacked still pays their monthly sub. If GGG did this, they'd be hurting the economy for the majority of the players in favor of catering to those who weren't able to keep their account secure

This is only one example that's relevant to the thread. I could go on and on about other ways Blizzard doesn't care about their customers.

No you can't. I'm no Blizzard fanboy (my avatar on MMOC was a panda with a giant red slash through it in protest of the fucking kiddie panda expansion that made me quit WoW after 6 years). But people who say any company "doesn't care about its customers" are just retards with an axe to grind.

There are zero ways Blizzard "doesn't care about its customers". What there may be are "things skinnay doesn't agree with". That’s okay. There are shit tons of “things Firecrest doesn't agree with”. But when you try to label those issues as things that Blizzard has intentionally done to piss off their players, you just look like an idiot to everyone. Well, not everyone. The other idiots who already agree with you probably pump their fists in the air and go, “Yeah, Fuck ‘em!”

But no one else is buying what you’re selling.

P.S. i was hacked and had my stuff stolen in WoW too a few years ago and it took me 2 weeks after messaging support to get my items back. Most in-game tickets aren't even responded to anywhere near within 2 hours. You got lucky.

Possibly. Maybe even probably. I remember being very surprised with how fast the restoration was completed. Here’s the kicker though. If the OP (or anyone else who’s ever been hacked in PoE) was given the opportunity to wait two weeks and then get their stuff back, do you think they’d take it and be grateful? I mean... The alternative here is to wait forever and get nothing back.

I certainly know which of the two I'd prefer.
